Supplies & Notions
Gather the following supplies before you begin sewing:
- Light- to medium-weight knit fabric
- 3-ply polyester thread
- Sewing machine
- Serger/overlock machine
- Flatlock machine
- Elastic band
- Tape measure
- Fabric shears
- Thread cutter
- Pins
- Sewing needles
- Tailor's chalk
- Iron
Machine alternatives
- If you don't have a serger, use a zigzag stitch with the presser foot setting lower than 1. If available, use a walking foot for improved handling of knit fabrics.
- If you don't have a flatlock machine, use a twin needle to achieve a similar finish. Alternatively, use a narrow zigzag stitch or a straight stitch with a looser thread tension.
- Always test your stitch settings on a fabric scrap before sewing your garment.
Fabric Recommendations
The sewing guide recommends light- to medium-weight knit fabrics with at least 10% spandex, including:
- Cotton knit with elastane
- Polyester blend knit with elastane
- Viscose blend knit with elastane
- Stretch velour
- Stretch velvet
The sample garment shown in the sewing guide is made from poly spandex single jersey fabric (10% spandex).
This fabric is recommended because it is:
- Lightweight
- Smooth and soft in texture
- Stretchable with a good drape
- Durable and long-lasting
- Breathable and comfortable
- Crease-resistant
Size Charts
Check the size charts and measure yourself to select the correct size, using the garment and body measurement tables in the guide.
Verify how much fabric you need by referencing the fabric yield table in the guide.
Pattern Inventory: What Pieces to Prepare

The Kaya Yoga Pants Sewing Pattern includes the following pattern pieces:
- A. Front — Cut 2 Fabric
- B. Back — Cut 2 Fabric
- C. Waistband — Cut 1 Fabric
The guide includes both A4/US Letter files for home printing and A0 files for copy-shop printing.
Pattern Marking

Before cutting your fabric, familiarize yourself with the markings shown on the pattern pieces. These markings help ensure accurate alignment throughout construction. The pattern includes:
- Grainline
- Waistline
- Hip line
- Crotch line
- Crotch level
- Knee line
- Side seam
- Inseam
- Center notch
- Hemline
- Seam allowance
The sewing guide notes that the inseam is the measurement from the crotch down to the ankle bone, representing the length of the inner leg.
Cutting Layout

The sewing guide provides cutting layouts for both 45-inch and 60-inch fabric widths.
For the best results:
- Arrange the pattern pieces according to the recommended cutting layouts.
- Position every grainline parallel to the fabric selvage.
- Pin the pattern pieces securely before cutting to improve accuracy.
- The layouts are intended for non-directional fabrics.
- Purchase additional fabric if you are using fabrics with nap or directional prints.
- The illustrated layouts use the medium size as the example.
Fabric Cutting and Preparation
Prepare your fabric carefully before beginning construction.
Arrange all pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams, ensuring every grainline arrow runs parallel to the fabric selvage.
If you are using fabric shears, trace the pattern pieces before cutting and trim away any pen, pencil, or chalk lines as you cut. Remember to cut all notches, as these markings help align the pieces accurately during assembly.
Transfer all required pattern markings, including circles, buttonholes, and fold lines, to the wrong side of the fabric using tailor's chalk or another suitable marking tool. Mark the center front on pieces cut on the fold to ensure accurate alignment during construction.
Seam Allowance
Please follow the seam allowances as indicated on the pattern file layers. These are provided specifically for each piece to ensure accurate construction.
This pattern uses a 1 cm (or 0.38 inch) seam allowance all around and 2.5 cm (or 1 inch) at the hem.
Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions
Step 1: Sew the Front and Back Crotch Seams
1a. Sew the front crotch seam
Place the two Front pieces with right sides together. Align the crotch line and sew the seam using an overlock stitch.
1b. Complete the front assembly
Continue sewing along the aligned crotch line with an overlock stitch until the front crotch seam is fully joined.
1c. Sew the back crotch seam
Repeat Steps 1a–1b for the Back pieces. Place them right sides together, align the crotch line, and sew the seam with an overlock stitch.
1d. Press the crotch seams
Spread open the front leg piece and press the crotch seam flat with an iron.
Repeat this step for the back leg piece.
Step 2: Sew the Inseams
Place the prepared Front and Back pieces right sides together. Align the inseams carefully and pin them if needed.
Sew along the inseams using an overlock stitch to join the front and back leg pieces together.
Step 3: Sew the Side Seams
Align the side seams of the pants with right sides together. Pin the pieces in place, then sew along both side seams using an overlock stitch to complete the main body of the pants.
Step 4: Prepare and Attach the Waistband
4a. Prepare the elastic
Take a 2-inch wide elastic band and cut it to the same length as the waistband measurement.
4b. Fold the waistband
Fold the Waistband in half widthwise with the right sides together and press the fold.
4c. Insert the elastic
Place the elastic band around the waistband and pin the side edges together to keep the elastic in position.
4d. Close the waistband
Overlock the side edges together to form a continuous waistband.
4e. Fold the waistband
Fold the waistband lengthwise with the right side facing out, sandwiching the elastic band inside the waistband.
4f. Attach the waistband
Place the open edge of the waistband along the waistline of the pants. Pin the waistband evenly around the waist, stretching it as needed so it matches the waist opening.
4g. Sew the waistband
Attach the waistband to the pants using an overlock stitch.
4h. Secure the waistband
Turn the waistband upward and sew around the waist seamline to secure the waistband in place.
Step 5: Hem the Pants
Fold the hem toward the wrong side of the pants and press it.
Sew the hem using a flatlock stitch from the right side of the garment so the neat double stitch line appears on the front of the pants.
If you do not have a flatlock machine, use a twin needle or a narrow zigzag stitch as described in the sewing guide.
