Pattern Inventory: What Pieces to Prepare

Prepare the following pattern pieces before cutting your fabric:

  • A. Front — Cut 2 Fabric
  • B. Back — Cut 2 Fabric

If printing at home, use the A4/US Letter pattern files. For copy shop printing, use the A0 pattern files.

Pattern Marking

Before cutting your fabric, familiarize yourself with the markings included on the pattern pieces:

  • Grainline
  • Side seam
  • Waist edge
  • Waistline
  • Hip line
  • Crotch line
  • Crotch level
  • Inseam
  • Knee line
  • Hemline
  • Seam allowance

The sewing guide also explains that the inseam is measured from the crotch down to the ankle, representing the length of the inner leg.

Cutting Layout

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the recommended cutting layouts for 45-inch or 60-inch fabric widths.

Ensure each grainline runs parallel to the fabric selvage before pinning the pattern pieces in place. The layouts shown are intended for non-directional fabrics. If your fabric has a nap or directional print, allow extra fabric for proper placement.

The illustrated layouts use US Size 24 as the sample size.

Fabric Cutting and Preparation

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams, ensuring that each grainline is parallel to the fabric selvage.

If using fabric shears, trace the pattern pieces before cutting. Trim away any marking lines while preserving all notches to help align the garment accurately during assembly.

Transfer all important pattern markings—including circles, buttonholes, fold lines, and center-front markings—to the wrong side of the fabric before sewing.

Seam Allowance

Please follow the seam allowances as indicated on the pattern file layers. These are provided specifically for each piece to ensure accurate construction.

This pattern uses a 1 cm (3/8") seam allowance all around and 2 cm (3/4") at the hem.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

1. Sew the Front and Back Crotch Seams

1a. Place the two Front pieces with right sides together.

1b. Align the front crotch curve and sew along the crotch seam.

1c. Repeat the same process for the two Back pieces, sewing the back crotch seam.

1d. Open the front crotch seam and press it flat. Repeat this step for the back crotch seam.

2. Sew the Inseams

Place one prepared Front leg and one prepared Back leg with right sides together.

Align the inseams and sew them together using an overlock stitch.

Repeat for the second pant leg.

3. Sew the Side Seams

Align the side seams of each pant leg with right sides together.

Sew along both side seams using an overlock stitch to complete the main body of the pants.

4. Attach the Waistband

4a. Cut an elastic band using your waist measurement, reducing the length by 2–4 inches, depending on your preferred fit.

For example, if your waist measures 28 inches, use a 26-inch elastic for a regular fit.

4b. Join the elastic ends using either of the following methods:

Method i: Cut a 1.5-inch piece of muslin the same width as the elastic. Place it underneath the overlapping elastic ends and sew across them with a zigzag stitch to create a smooth waistband join.

Method ii: Add a 1 cm seam allowance to both elastic ends, overlap them, and secure them with a zigzag stitch. Keep in mind that this method creates a slightly thicker join when using heavier elastic.

4c. Place the completed elastic band along the waistline. Stretch the elastic evenly to match the waist opening while pinning it in place. Sew the elastic to the waist using an overlock stitch.

4d. Fold the elastic inward from the waist edge seamline.

4e. Stitch along the overlocked seam to secure the waistband neatly. Add a second row of stitching approximately 0.25 cm away for a decorative finish. A flatlock stitch may also be used as an alternative.

5. Hem the Pants

Fold each pant hem toward the wrong side using the hem allowance provided in the pattern and press.

Flatlock the hem from the right side so the neat double row of stitching appears on the outside of the garment.
