Cutting Layout

The Hazel Twist Front Crop Shirt Sewing Pattern includes separate cutting layouts for 45-inch and 60-inch-wide fabric.
Arrange the pattern pieces so that the grainline arrows run parallel to the fabric selvage. Pin the pieces securely before cutting to help maintain their position and improve accuracy.
The illustrated layouts are intended for non-directional fabrics. Purchase additional fabric when working with a directional print or fabric with a nap.
The Medium size is used to demonstrate both cutting layouts in the sewing guide.
Fabric Cutting and Preparation
Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout provided for your fabric width. Position each piece carefully, ensuring that the grainline arrow runs parallel to the selvage.
When using fabric shears, trace around the pattern pieces before cutting. Cut away any visible pen, pencil, or chalk lines and accurately cut all notches shown along the edges.
Transfer construction markings such as circles, buttonholes, and fold lines to the wrong side of the fabric. Mark the centre front of pieces cut on the fold to help with accurate alignment.
Seam Allowance
Please follow the seam allowances as indicated on the pattern file layers. These are provided specifically for each piece to ensure accurate construction.
This pattern uses a 0.9 cm (or 0.38 inch) seam allowance all around, 1.2 cm (or 0.5 inch) at all around the collar band, collar and sleeve, and 4.1 cm (or 1.6 inch) at the sleeve hem.
Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions
1. Prepare the Front Panel
1a. Place the two Front pieces with right sides together.
Align the hem and placket opening, then sew along the seamline.
1b. Turn the Front panel right side out.
Stitch along the side seams, armholes, shoulder seams, and neckline. Topstitch along the marked placket line.
1c. Twist the Front panel twice to create the twisted knot at the centre front.
2. Prepare the Back Panel
2a. Fold the Back piece with right sides together, matching the dart legs.
Sew along each marked dart leg from the wrong side. Press the completed darts toward one side to reduce bulk.
2b. Place the Back Hem Facing over the Back panel with right sides together.
Match the facing notches with the dart stitching lines, then sew along the hem seamline.
2c. Turn the Back Hem Facing toward the wrong side of the Back panel.
Fold the upper edge of the facing toward the wrong side and topstitch it to finish the raw edge.
2d. Sew the sides of the Back Hem Facing to the corresponding sides of the Back panel.
3. Sew the Shoulder Seams
Place the prepared Front panel over the prepared Back panel with right sides together.
Align the shoulder seams and sew along each shoulder seamline.
4. Prepare and Attach the Collar
4a. Place the two Collar pieces with right sides together.
Sew along both short sides and the upper edge of the Collar, leaving the neckline edge open.
4b. Clip the Collar corners to reduce bulk.
Turn the Collar right side out so that the wrong sides are together. Use a pencil or another pointed tool carefully to shape the Collar corners.
4c. Take one Collar Band piece and fold its neckline seam allowance toward the wrong side.
Press the fold and use basting stitches to hold it in place.
4d. Place the Collar between the two Collar Band pieces, with the Collar Band pieces facing right sides together.
Sew through the layers, joining the Collar to both Collar Band pieces and closing the short ends of the bands.
4e. Turn the Collar Band right side out and press along the stitching line to create a stable Collar shape.
4f. Place the unfolded Collar Band edge along the bodice neckline with right sides together.
Pin it in place and sew along the neckline seamline. Keep the folded Collar Band edge free during this step.
4g. Fold the neckline seam allowances inside the Collar Band.
Bring the folded edge of the inner Collar Band over the seam allowances and pin it in place.
4h. Sew along the folded Collar Band edge to enclose the seam allowances and complete the neckline finish.
Remove the basting stitches after securing the folded edge.
5. Attach the Sleeves
Turn the bodice right side out.
Place one Sleeve over the corresponding armhole with right sides together. Match the front and back Sleeve notches with the front and back armhole notches.
Sew along the armhole seamline to attach the Sleeve.
Repeat the same process for the second Sleeve.
6. Finish the Sleeve Hems
Turn the shirt wrong side out.
Fold each Sleeve hem allowance twice at an equal width. Press the folds and pin the hem in place.
Sew the hem from the right side of the fabric.
Repeat for the second Sleeve.
7. Sew the Side and Sleeve Seams
With the shirt turned wrong side out, align the bodice side seam and Sleeve seam.
Sew continuously along the seamline to join the bodice side and Sleeve.
Repeat on the opposite side to complete the Hazel Twist Front Crop Shirt.
