Pointed hem crop tops are a creative alternative to a classic cropped top. Their shaped hemlines add visual interest while still offering the familiar construction details of a long-sleeved collared shirt. Sewing one also provides useful practice with knit fabrics, front closures, collars, sleeves, and decorative edge finishes.
The Winslet's Rowan Pointed Hem Crop Top Sewing Pattern features a close-fitting cropped silhouette, long sleeves, a pointed hemline, and a secure front closure. The pattern also includes two ways to finish the centre front, allowing you to use snap fasteners for adjustability or sew the front pieces together for a fixed closure.

Cutting Layout

The Rowan Pointed Hem Crop Top Sewing Pattern includes separate cutting layouts for 45-inch and 60-inch-wide fabric.
Arrange the pattern pieces so that each grainline runs parallel to the fabric selvage. Pinning the pieces before cutting will help prevent movement and improve accuracy.
The illustrated layouts are intended for non-directional fabrics. Purchase additional fabric when using material with a directional print or nap.
The Extra Small size is used to demonstrate both cutting layouts in the sewing guide.
Fabric Cutting and Preparation
Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout provided for your fabric width. Position each piece carefully, ensuring that the grainline arrow runs parallel to the selvage.
If you are using fabric shears, trace around the pattern pieces before cutting. Cut away any visible pen, pencil, or chalk lines and accurately cut all notches shown along the edges.
Transfer construction markings such as circles, buttonholes, and fold lines to the wrong side of the fabric. Mark the centre front of pieces cut on the fold to help with accurate alignment.
Seam Allowance
Please follow the seam allowances as indicated on the pattern file layers. These are provided specifically for each piece to ensure accurate construction.
This pattern uses a 0.9 cm (or 0.38 inch) seam allowance all around, 0.6 cm (or 0.25 inch) at the hem and 1.6 cm (or 0.63 inch) at the center front.
Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions
1. Finish the Centre-Front Edges
Fold the centre-front seam allowance inward by approximately 1 cm.
Fold it again along the marked seamline, then sew close to the folded edge.
Repeat the same process for the second Front piece.
You may apply interfacing to the centre-front area if you would like a firmer finish.
2. Create the Placket
2a. Cut a rectangular piece measuring 3 cm wide. Its length should equal the distance between the centre-front joining point and the hemline on the Front pattern piece.
2b. Fold the placket across its width with right sides together.
Sew along both short sides.
2c. Turn the placket right side out.
Press it flat and carefully shape the corners.
2d. Finish the open long edge of the placket with an overlock stitch.
3. Attach the Placket
Place the prepared placket on the wrong side of the right Front piece.
Align the overlocked edge with the centre-front seamline, keeping the folded edge of the placket facing away from the Front piece.
Sew the placket in place.
4. Add the Centre-Front Closure
Attach the snap fasteners to the placket on the right Front piece.
Attach the corresponding snap fasteners to the centre-front edge of the left Front piece, spacing them evenly.
The snap-fastener closure provides some flexibility for adjusting the fit around the bust.
The sewing guide also provides an alternative way to join the centre front:
i. Place the two Front pieces with right sides together.
ii. Sew from the centre-front joining point down to the hem.
iii. Open the Front pieces and press the seam allowances flat.
iv. Fold the seam allowances inward and sew them in place to finish the raw edges.
Use either the snap-fastener closure or the sewn centre-front finish.
5. Sew the Shoulder Seams
Place the Front and Back pieces with right sides together.
Align the shoulder edges and sew both shoulder seams.
6. Attach the Sleeves
6a. Match the centre notch of one Sleeve with the corresponding shoulder seam.
Place the Sleeve and bodice with right sides together. Match the front and back armhole notches and pin the Sleeve around the armhole.
6b. Sew along the armhole seamline to attach the Sleeve.
Repeat the same process for the second Sleeve.
7. Sew the Sleeve and Side Seams
Match the Sleeve seams and bodice side seams at the point where the armhole seams meet.
Pin the seam from the Sleeve cuff to the bodice hem.
Sew continuously along the Sleeve and side seam.
Repeat on the opposite side.
8. Finish the Pointed Hem and Sleeve Hems
Finish the shirt hem using an overlock stitch or zigzag stitch.
Begin at one side seam and continue around the hem until you return to the starting point. Pull the fabric gently while stitching to create the desired frilled effect.
Test this technique on a scrap of your chosen fabric before working on the finished shirt.
Repeat the same process around both Sleeve hems.
9. Prepare and Attach the Collar
9a. Place the two Collar pieces with right sides together.
Sew along both short sides and the upper edge, leaving the neckline edge open.
9b. Clip the Collar corners to reduce bulk.
Turn the Collar right side out so that the wrong sides are together. Use a pencil or another pointed tool carefully to shape the corners.
9c. Take one Collar Stand piece and fold its neckline seam allowance toward the wrong side.
Press the fold and secure it temporarily with basting stitches.
9d. Place the Collar between the two Collar Stand pieces, with the Collar Stand pieces facing right sides together.
Sew through all layers, joining the Collar to both Collar Stand pieces and closing the short ends.
9e. Turn the Collar Stand right side out and press along the stitching line to create a stable Collar shape.
9f. Place the unfolded edge of the Collar Stand along the bodice neckline with right sides together.
Pin the pieces in place and sew along the neckline seamline, keeping the folded Collar Stand edge free.
9g. Fold the neckline seam allowances inside the Collar Stand.
Bring the folded edge of the inner Collar Stand over the seam allowances. Pin it in place if needed, then sew along the folded edge to enclose the seam allowances.
Remove the basting stitches after the folded edge has been secured.
