Halter tops are a popular warm-weather sewing project because they combine an open neckline with a comfortable sleeveless shape. They also give sewists an opportunity to practise techniques such as shirring, inserting a zipper, creating fabric ties, and joining shaped bodice sections.

The Winslet's Alice Halter Top Sewing Pattern features a front twist detail that creates a small keyhole opening, adjustable neck ties, a flexible smocked back, and a softly flared hem. The fitted upper section and adjustable details make this an enjoyable intermediate project with a polished finish.

Cutting Layout

The Alice Halter Top Sewing Pattern includes separate cutting layouts for 45-inch and 60-inch-wide fabric.

Arrange the pattern pieces so that every grainline arrow runs parallel to the fabric selvage. Pin the pieces securely before cutting to help maintain their placement.

The illustrated layouts are intended for non-directional fabrics. Purchase additional fabric if your material has a directional print or nap.

The Small size is used to demonstrate both cutting layouts in the sewing guide.

Fabric Cutting and Preparation

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout provided for your fabric width. Position each piece carefully, ensuring that the grainline arrow runs parallel to the selvage.

If you are using fabric shears, trace around the pattern pieces before cutting. Cut away any visible pen, pencil, or chalk lines and accurately cut all notches shown along the edges.

Transfer construction markings such as circles, buttonholes, and fold lines to the wrong side of the fabric. Mark the center front of pieces cut on the fold to help with accurate alignment.

Seam Allowance

Please follow the seam allowances as indicated on the pattern file layers. These are provided specifically for each piece to ensure accurate construction.

This pattern uses a 1 cm (or 0.38 inch) seam allowance all around and 3.81 cm (or 1.5 inch) all around the smocking block.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

1. Join the Front Top Pieces

Place both Front Top pieces with right sides together.

Sew along the neckline to join the two pieces.

2. Sew the Front Cut-Out

Sew from one cut-out notch to the other.

Clip the notches carefully without cutting through the stitching.

Turn the Front Top right side out and press it neatly.

3. Attach the Front Top to the Front Skirt

Place the Front Top onto the right side of the Front Skirt.

Match the waistline notches and pin the pieces together.

Begin at one side of the cut-out waistline and sew to the end of the waistline. Repeat from the other cut-out waistline edge to the opposite end.

Press the seam downward from the waistline to complete the front section.

4. Finish the Front Cut-Out Waistline

Fold the cut-out waistline edge of the Front Skirt twice from the seamline toward the wrong side.

Press the folds and sew along the edge to finish the opening neatly.

5. Create the Smocking

Wind elastic thread onto the bobbin and use regular thread as the upper thread. Reduce the thread tension on your sewing machine.

Check the elastic thread spool before beginning so that you have enough thread to complete each line without interruption.

Test the smocking technique on a scrap of fabric before sewing the final Smocking Block.

Mark evenly spaced stitching lines across the Smocking Block. The sample garment uses 15 lines of smocking.

Begin each row with a few stitches. Tie a knot in the loose thread end to prevent it from slipping.

Sew all 15 stitching lines across the Smocking Block.

6. Prepare the Back Top

6a. Place the Center Back Smocking Panel template over the finished Smocking Block. Mark the required size with chalk and trim the block if necessary.

6b. Fold the back-across edge of the smocked panel twice and sew along the folded edge. Stretch the fabric while sewing so that the finished edge lies flat.

6c. Place the wrong side of the smocked panel onto the right side of one Side Back piece.

6d. Place the matching second Side Back piece over the smocked panel. Match all three center-back notches and pin the seamline.

6e. Sew along the back-across edge of the two Side Back pieces. Do not sew through the smocked panel during this step.

6f. Sew the center-back seamline through the smocked panel and both Side Back pieces.

6g. Turn the section right side out.

6h. Repeat Steps 6c–6g with the remaining two Side Back pieces on the opposite side of the smocked panel.

7. Attach the Back Skirt

Place the right side of the Back Skirt onto the prepared Back Top.

Match the waistline notches with the side seams of the stretched smocking section.

Stretch the smocked panel until it matches the length of the Back Skirt waistline, then pin the pieces together.

Sew along the waistline to join the two sections.

8. Insert the Zipper

Place the right side of one zipper tape onto the right side of the top.

Sew close to the zipper teeth, beginning at the top and continuing to the zipper bottom stop.

Repeat the same process for the second side of the zipper tape.

9. Secure the Bottom of the Zipper

Close the zipper and turn the top wrong side out.

Sew the side seam, beginning 1–2 cm above the zipper bottom stop and continuing to the bottom stop.

Pivot the fabric and sew horizontally across the bottom of the zipper tape.

Sew a few stitches backward and forward to anchor the zipper securely.

10. Sew the Side Seams

Sew one side seam from the upper edge down to the hem.

On the side containing the zipper, begin at the zipper end and continue sewing down to the hem.

11. Finish the Hem

Fold the hem of the top twice toward the wrong side along the seamline.

Press the folds, then sew along the folded edge. Begin at one side seam and continue around the full hem until you return to the starting point.

12. Create the Halter Strap

12a. Place the two Strap pieces with right sides together.

Sew across one short end, 0.25 inches from the raw edge.

12b. Open the joined seam allowance and press it flat.

12c. Fold the joined strap in half lengthwise with the wrong side facing outward. Press the fold.

12d. Sew along the long open edge, 0.25 inches from the raw edge.

12e. Use a loop turner to turn the completed strap right side out.

13. Attach and Tie the Strap

Pass the completed strap through the front cut-out of the top.

Tie the strap into your preferred knot style or follow the simple knot shown in the sewing guide.

Adjust the neck tie until the halter top sits comfortably.
