Supplies & Notions
Gather the following supplies before you begin sewing:
- Main fabric
- 3-ply polyester thread
- Sewing machine
- Sewing needles
- Tape measure
- Fabric shears
- Fabric chalk
- Thread cutter
- Pins
- Iron
- 1½" wide elastic
- ½" wide elastic
- Fusible interfacing (optional for the welt pocket)
The sewing guide also recommends:
- Using an overlock stitch with a flat stitch for the hem whenever possible.
- Using a zig-zag stitch for overlocking and a straight stitch for hemming if you do not have a serger.
- Pinning pieces before sewing for improved accuracy.
- Pressing the garment after every step for the best results.
- Referring to the Pattern Marking page throughout construction to locate seamlines, notches, and reference points.
Fabric Recommendations
The sewing guide recommends using light- to medium-weight woven fabrics, including:
- Cotton poplin
- Cotton twill
- Chino
- Chambray
- Linen blends
For the fly and welt pocket version, woven fabrics are strongly recommended to provide the structure and stability needed for accurate construction.
Stable knit fabrics such as French terry or fleece can also be used for a softer jogger style. When sewing with knit fabrics, the guide recommends choosing the drawstring version and omitting the welt pocket, since knit fabrics are more difficult to stabilize for welt pocket construction.
The sample garment shown in the guide is sewn in cotton twill, which is recommended because:
- It has a slightly structured texture that helps the joggers hold their shape.
- It is stable and easy to sew, making it suitable for intermediate sewists.
Size Charts
Check the size charts and measure yourself to select the correct size, using the garment and body measurement tables in the guide.
Verify how much fabric you need by referencing the fabric yield table in the guide.
Pattern Inventory: What Pieces to Prepare

The Mason Kids Joggers Sewing Pattern includes the following pattern pieces:
- A. Front — Cut 2 fabric
- B. Back — Cut 2 fabric
- C. Side Pocket — Cut 2 fabric
- D. Welt Pocket — Cut 2 fabric
- E. Waistband — Cut 1 fabric
- F. Drawstring — Cut 1 fabric
If you are printing at home, use the A4/US Letter pattern files. If printing at a copy shop, use the A0 pattern files.
Pattern Marking

Before cutting your fabric, familiarize yourself with the markings included on each pattern piece. These markings help ensure accurate construction throughout the sewing process.
The pattern includes markings for:
- Grainline
- Waist
- Side seam
- Inseam
- Crotch
- Hem
- Pocket opening
- Welt pocket box
- Pocket top
- Pocket bottom
- Welt top
- Welt bottom
- Center pocket notch
- Side notches
- Seam allowance
The guide also notes that the inseam refers to the measurement from the crotch down to the ankle bone, representing the length of the inner leg.
Cutting Layout

The sewing guide provides cutting layouts for both 45-inch and 60-inch fabric widths.
For the best results:
- Arrange all pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams.
- Keep every grainline arrow parallel to the fabric selvage.
- Pin the pattern pieces securely before cutting for greater accuracy.
- The layouts are non-directional.
- Purchase extra fabric if using fabrics with a nap or directional prints.
- The cutting layout illustrations use Age 2Y for representation.
Fabric Cutting and Preparation
Prepare your fabric before cutting by following these steps.
Lay Out Your Pattern Pieces
Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams. Position each piece so the grainline arrow runs parallel to the fabric selvage.
Cut Your Fabric
If using fabric shears, trace the pattern pieces before cutting. Cut carefully outside any pen, pencil, or chalk lines, and remember to clip all notches to help align the garment accurately during assembly.
Transfer Pattern Markings
Transfer all markings, including circles, buttonholes, and fold lines, to the wrong side of the fabric using a marking pen, pencil, or chalk. Mark the center front of any pieces cut on the fold to ensure accurate alignment during construction.
Seam Allowance
Use the seam allowances marked on each pattern piece. These are precisely included to ensure proper fit.
This pattern uses a 1 cm (3/8") seam allowance all around, a 3.8 cm (1½") seam allowance at the bottom hem, and a 1.3 cm (1/2") seam allowance at the waistband.
Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions
1. Attach the Side Pockets
1a. Place the side pocket (Pattern C) on the front piece (Pattern A) with right sides together. Align the pocket opening edges and sew along the pocket opening seamline.
1b. Turn the pocket away from the front piece and understitch close to the seam on the pocket side. Press the pocket toward the wrong side and topstitch along the pocket opening for a neat finish.
1c. Fold the pocket bag along the center pocket notch so both pocket layers align with right sides together. Press the fold.
Tip: Baste the pocket to the waist edge to help prevent the pocket from twisting during assembly.
1d. Sew along the pocket bottom seamline to close the pocket pouch.
1e. Finish the raw edge of the pocket bottom using a serger or zig-zag stitch. Baste the completed pocket to the waist edge to prevent shifting during the remaining construction steps.
Repeat Step 1 for the second front and side pocket pieces.
2. Prepare the Welt Pocket
2a. Apply fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the back piece (Pattern B) around the welt pocket marking if additional stability is desired.
2b. Place the welt pocket piece (Pattern D) on the right side of the back piece, aligning it with the welt pocket box marking. Sew around the marked welt pocket opening.
2c. Cut along the center of the welt pocket opening and clip diagonally into each corner, stopping just before the stitching.
2d. Turn the welt pocket through the opening to the wrong side of the back piece. Press carefully to create a clean rectangular opening.
2e. Fold the welt pocket so the folded edge forms the finished welt. Press it flat, ensuring the welt sits evenly inside the opening.
2f. Topstitch the short ends of the welt to secure it neatly in place.
2g. Trim the remaining pocket piece so it matches the size of the attached welt pocket piece.
2h. Fold the welt pocket piece at the center to form the pocket pouch. Align the top and bottom edges and press.
2i. Sew both side edges of the pocket pouch together.
2j. Fold the back piece away and align the welt pocket layers. Sew along the top edge of the pocket pouch to close it, taking care not to catch the folded welt edge from Step 2e in the seam.
Repeat Step 2 for the second back piece.
Tip: Baste the completed pocket to the waist edge to prevent shifting while assembling the joggers.
3. Finish the Crotch Seams
Place the two front pieces right sides together and sew the front crotch seam. Repeat the same process for the two back pieces, sewing the back crotch seam. Press both seams open for a smooth finish.
4. Sew the Inseams
With right sides together, match one front leg to one back leg. Align the inseam edges and sew each inseam from the crotch to the hem.
Repeat for the second leg and press the seam allowances.
5. Sew the Side Seams
Place the front and back leg pieces right sides together, matching the side seams and pocket edges carefully.
Sew each side seam continuously from the waist to the hem, securing the pocket bags within the seam as you stitch. Press the completed side seams open or toward the back, depending on your preferred finish.
6. Finish the Ankle Cuffs
6a. Fold each pant hem toward the wrong side to form the elastic casing. Press the fold and sew around the hem, leaving a 1–1.5 inch opening for inserting the elastic.
6b. Thread the ankle elastic through the casing using a safety pin. Make sure the elastic remains flat and is not twisted. Overlap the elastic ends by approximately 3/8 inch and secure them with a zig-zag stitch. Close the opening to complete the ankle cuff.
Repeat the same process for the second leg.
Tip: The elastic lengths provided in the guide are recommended starting points. You can shorten the elastic for a snugger fit or lengthen it slightly for a looser fit before joining the ends.
7. Prepare the Waistband
7a. Fold the waistband (Pattern E) in half with right sides together. Align the short edges and sew the side seam.
7b. Fold the waistband lengthwise with wrong sides together to create the waistband casing.
7c. Create two buttonholes at the center front of the waistband for the drawstring before attaching the waistband to the joggers.
8. Attach the Waistband
8a. Place the prepared waistband onto the top of the joggers with right sides together. Match the side seam of the waistband with the center back seam and sew around the waist seamline, leaving a 1–1.5 inch opening at the back.
8b. Insert the waistband elastic through the opening using a safety pin. Ensure the elastic is not twisted inside the casing. Overlap the elastic ends by about 3/8 inch and secure them together using a zig-zag stitch. Once satisfied with the fit, stitch the opening closed to complete the waistband.
9. Create and Insert the Drawstring
9a. Fold the drawstring (Pattern F) in half lengthwise with the wrong sides facing out. Press along the fold to create a crease.
9b. Sew along the long edge using a lock stitch.
9c. Turn the drawstring right side out using a loop turner or a safety pin. Fold in the raw ends and hand stitch them closed for a neat finish.
9d. Insert the finished drawstring through one buttonhole and out through the other using a safety pin.
Note: You can make the drawstring from the same fabric as the joggers. The contrasting color shown in the sewing guide is for illustration purposes only.
