Supplies & Notions

Gather the following supplies before you begin sewing:

  • Main fabric
  • 3-ply polyester thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Sewing needles
  • Serger (optional)
  • Coverstitch machine (optional)
  • Tape measure
  • Fabric shears
  • Fabric chalk
  • Thread cutter
  • Pins
  • Iron

The sewing guide also provides alternatives if you don't own a serger or coverstitch machine:

  • Use a zig-zag stitch with the presser foot setting lower than 1 as an alternative to an overlock stitch.
  • Use a twin needle, narrow zig-zag stitch, or a straight stitch with a looser thread setting instead of a coverstitch machine.
  • Always test your stitches on a fabric scrap before sewing the garment.

Fabric Recommendations

The sewing guide recommends using light- to medium-weight knitted fabrics with 30–50% stretch for flexibility and comfort, including:

  • Rib knit
  • Jersey
  • Interlock
  • French terry
  • Lightweight sweatshirt fleece
  • Wool knits

The sample garment shown in the sewing guide is sewn using jersey fabric, which is recommended because it offers:

  • Soft drape
  • Smooth, wrinkle-resistant texture
  • Breathability and comfort
  • Easy sewing with ballpoint needles

Size Charts

Check the size charts and measure yourself to select the correct size, using the garment and body measurement tables in the guide.

Verify how much fabric you need by referencing the fabric yield table in the guide.

Pattern Inventory: What Pieces to Prepare

The Remi Kids Short Sleeve T-Shirt Sewing Pattern includes the following pattern pieces:

  • A. Front — Cut 1 fabric
  • B. Back — Cut 1 fabric
  • C. Neck Band — Cut 1 fabric

If you are printing at home, use the A4/US Letter pattern files. If you are printing at a copy shop, use the A0 pattern files.

Pattern Marking

Before cutting your fabric, familiarize yourself with the markings included on the pattern pieces. These markings help ensure accurate construction throughout the sewing process.

The pattern includes markings for:

  • Grainline
  • Shoulder
  • Neckline
  • Side seam
  • Sleeve hem
  • Hem
  • Long edge
  • Seam allowance

Cutting Layout

The sewing guide provides cutting layouts for both 45-inch and 60-inch fabric widths.

For the best results:

  • Arrange all pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams.
  • Keep every grainline arrow parallel to the fabric selvage.
  • Pin the pattern pieces securely before cutting for greater accuracy.
  • The layouts are non-directional.
  • Purchase additional fabric if using directional prints or fabrics with a nap.
  • The cutting layout illustrations use Age 2Y for representation.

Fabric Cutting and Preparation

Prepare your fabric before cutting by following these steps.

Prewash Your Fabric

Prewash the fabric before cutting to prevent shrinkage after sewing. Press the fabric to remove any creases before laying out your pattern pieces.

Lay Out Your Pattern Pieces

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams, ensuring that every grainline arrow runs parallel to the fabric selvage.

Cut Your Fabric

If using fabric shears, trace the pattern pieces before cutting. Cut carefully outside any pen, pencil, or chalk lines, and remember to clip all notches to help align the garment during assembly.

Transfer Pattern Markings

Transfer all markings, including circles and fold lines, to the wrong side of the fabric using a marking pen, pencil, or chalk. Mark the center front of any pieces cut on the fold to ensure accurate alignment during construction.

Seam Allowance

Use the seam allowances marked on each pattern piece. These are precisely included to ensure proper fit.

This pattern uses a 1 cm (3/8") seam allowance all around and 0.6 cm (1/4") all around the neck band pattern piece.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

1. Attach the Shoulders

1a. Place the front (Pattern A) and back (Pattern B) pieces with their right sides facing each other. Align the shoulder seams carefully.

1b. Sew along both shoulder seams using an overlock stitch or your preferred stretch stitch. Press the seam allowances toward the back.

2. Sew the Side Seams

Align the front and back side seams with right sides together. Sew along both side seams using an overlock stitch or another suitable stretch stitch.

3. Finish the Sleeve Hems

Fold each sleeve hem toward the wrong side and press.

Coverstitch the sleeve hems from the right side so the neat double row of stitching appears on the outside of the garment. Repeat for the second sleeve.

4. Finish the Bottom Hem

Fold the bottom hem toward the wrong side and press.

Coverstitch the hem from the right side, ensuring the double row of stitching is visible on the outside for a professional finish.

5. Prepare the Neck Band

5a. Fold the neck band (Pattern C) in half lengthwise with right sides together, aligning the short edges.

5b. Overlock the short edges together to create a continuous loop.

5c. Fold the neck band loop in half widthwise so the right side of the fabric faces outward. Press the folded neck band.

6. Attach the Neck Band

6a. Lay the T-shirt flat with the right side facing up.

6b. Position the raw edge of the prepared neck band along the right side of the neckline. Match the neck band seam with one of the shoulder seams. Since the neck band is intentionally smaller than the neckline, gently stretch it while pinning so it distributes evenly around the neckline.

Note: The neck band is drafted slightly smaller than the neckline to help it sit flat once sewn.

6c. Overlock the neck band to the neckline. For the most even finish, divide both the neckline and neck band into four equal sections and match them at the center front, center back, and shoulder seams before stitching. This helps distribute the stretch evenly and prevents puckering.

6d. Press the seam allowance toward the bodice. From the right side, topstitch close to the seamline to secure the neck band and keep the seam allowance lying flat.

7. Optional Neck Finishing Method Using a Seam Cover

For an extra clean, ready-to-wear finish at the back neckline, you can add a seam cover.

i. Measure the visible back neckline from shoulder to shoulder and add 3 cm to this measurement.

ii. Cut a rectangular strip with the greatest stretch running across the width. The strip should use the measured length and have a width equal to four times the seam allowance.

iii. Fold the strip in half widthwise with right sides together and overlock both short edges.

iv. Turn the strip right side out and press it flat to create the seam cover.

v. Position the prepared neck band from Step 6 on the right side of the neckline.

vi. Place the seam cover on top of the neck band at the back neckline, where it will remain visible from the inside of the finished garment. Overlock all layers together.

vii. Press the seam cover downward so it conceals the seam allowance. Topstitch along the seam allowance edge to hold everything securely in place and create a clean professional finish.
