Recommended fabrics include:

  • 100% Cotton
  • Cotton Blend
  • Cotton Twill
  • Silk Blend
  • Crepe
  • Georgette
  • Viscose

The sample garment shown throughout the guide is sewn in viscose crepe, which is recommended because it is:

  • Moisture-wicking
  • Machine washable in cold water with low-heat tumble drying
  • Crease-resistant
  • Easy to iron

Size Charts

Check the size charts and measure yourself to select the correct size, using the garment and body measurement tables in the guide.

Verify how much fabric you need by referencing the fabric yield table in the guide.

Pattern Inventory: What Pieces to Prepare

Prepare the following pattern pieces before cutting your fabric:

  • Front Right — Cut 1 Fabric
  • Front Left — Cut 1 Fabric
  • Back — Cut 1 Fabric
  • Front Waist Facing — Cut 1 Fabric
  • Back Waist Facing — Cut 1 Fabric
  • Elastic Front Ready Pattern — Cut 1 (used to measure elastic length)

If printing at home, use the A4 pattern files. If using a copy shop, use the A0 pattern files.

Pattern Marking

Transfer all pattern markings before sewing. The pattern includes:

  • Grainlines
  • Waistline
  • Hemline
  • Side seam markings
  • Seam allowance markings
  • Center front notch
  • Slit starting notch
  • Zipper end notch
  • Back dart notches
  • Dart markings
  • Ruching seam allowance
  • Front waist ready pattern for measuring the elastic length

Cutting Layout

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams, ensuring each grainline runs parallel to the fabric selvage.

The layouts are designed for both 45-inch and 60-inch fabric widths and are suitable for non-directional fabrics. If your fabric has a nap or directional print, purchase additional yardage.

The Front Waist Ready Pattern is used only to measure the elastic length and does not need to be cut from fabric.

Fabric Cutting and Preparation

Arrange all pattern pieces according to the cutting layout before cutting your fabric.

When cutting:

  • Position each pattern piece with the grainline parallel to the selvage.
  • Trace around the pattern pieces if using fabric shears.
  • Cut accurately, including all notches.
  • Transfer all markings—including circles, fold lines, and center front markings—to the wrong side of the fabric using tailor's chalk or a fabric marking pen.

These markings help align the pieces correctly during construction.

Seam Allowance

Please follow the seam allowances as indicated on the pattern file layers. These are provided specifically for each piece to ensure accurate construction.

This pattern uses a 1 cm (or 0.38 inch) seam allowance all around and 1.5 cm (or 0.6 inch) at the hem.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

1. Join the Front Skirt

1. Place the Front Right and Front Left pieces right sides together and sew the center front seam until you reach the slit starting notch.

2. Finish the Front Seam

2a. Spread the seam allowance open on the wrong side and press it flat.

2b. Sew from the hem to the slit starting point.

2c. Continue sewing around the seam allowance edge to neatly finish the raw edges.

3. Create the Front Ruching

3a. Cut elastic to approximately half the length of the ruching seam, or adjust the length to achieve your preferred amount of gathering.

3b. Place the elastic along the seam allowance of the Front Left and Front Right ruching panels.

3c. Using a zig-zag stitch, sew from the waist seam allowance down to the slit starting notch while stretching the elastic evenly to create the ruching.

4. Attach the Waist Elastic

4a. Cut the waist elastic to the same length as the Front Waist Ready Pattern.

4b. Position the elastic along the wrong side of the front waistline.

4c. Sew the elastic in place using a zig-zag stitch, stretching it evenly across the entire waistline.

5. Sew the Back Darts

5a. Fold each back dart with the right sides together, matching the dart legs.

5b. Stitch along the marked dart lines.

5c. Press each dart flat toward one side.

6. Attach the Front and Back Waist Facings

6a. Cut fusible interfacing using the Front Waist Facing pattern, excluding the seam allowances. Fuse it to the wrong side of the front waist facing with an iron.

6b. Place the Front Waist Facing right sides together with the front skirt and sew along the waistline.

6c. Press the seam open and understitch along the facing to secure the seam allowance. Fold the facing to the wrong side and press for a clean finish.

6d. Repeat the same process to attach the Back Waist Facing to the back skirt.

7. Sew One Side Seam

Place the front and back skirt pieces right sides together and sew the side seam that does not contain the zipper.

8. Attach the Zipper

8a. Finish the raw edge of the waist facing with an overlock stitch if desired, or fold and stitch the raw edge for a clean finish.

8b. Position one side of the zipper with the right side facing the front seam allowance, keeping the facing out of the way. Pin or baste the zipper in place and stitch close to the zipper teeth. Repeat the same process for the opposite zipper tape and the back skirt.

8c. Turn the facing to the right side and pull the zipper tape through. Stitch close to the zipper teeth, then return the facing to the wrong side and sew the corner with a point stitch. Repeat for the opposite side.

8d. Close the zipper and pull the zipper tape away. Sew from the zipper end using a backstitch and lock stitch. Remove the temporary stitches beneath the zipper end to neatly secure the zipper.

9. Sew the Remaining Side Seam

Sew the remaining section of the zipper side seam, starting from the zipper end and continuing to the hem.

10. Finish the Facing

For a cleaner finish, spread the seam allowance open on the opposite side seam, press it flat, and stitch along the existing seamline to secure the facing neatly in place.

11. Finish the Hem

Fold the hem allowance to the wrong side and stitch around the entire hem, beginning and ending at the side seam to create a clean, even finish.
