Cutting Layout

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams before cutting. Position every grainline parallel to the fabric selvage to ensure each piece is cut on grain for the best fit and drape.
Separate cutting layouts are provided for 45-inch and 60-inch-wide fabrics. The layouts are designed for non-directional fabrics. If you're using a fabric with a nap or directional print, purchase additional fabric to accommodate the layout. The sewing guide uses US size 26 as the example layout.
Fabric Cutting and Preparation
Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams, ensuring the grainline arrow on every piece runs parallel to the fabric selvage.
If you're using fabric shears, trace the pattern pieces before cutting. Remove any pen, pencil, or chalk lines as you cut, and clip all notches carefully. These markings help align the pieces accurately during construction.
Transfer all pattern markings, including circles, buttonholes, fold lines, and the center front marking, to the wrong side of the fabric using a marking pen, pencil, or chalk before sewing.
Seam Allowance
Please follow the seam allowances as indicated on the pattern file layers. These are provided specifically for each piece to ensure accurate construction.
This pattern uses:
- 1 cm (3/8") seam allowance all around.
- 2.5 cm (1") hem allowance at the hem.
Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions
1. Attach the Side Pockets
1a. Place one pocket piece on the right side of the front dress piece, aligning the pocket opening notches. Sew along the pocket opening.
1b. Repeat Step 1a for the second pocket on the opposite side of the front dress.
1c. Place one pocket piece on the right side of each back dress piece, aligning the pocket opening notches. Sew along the pocket openings.
2. Finish the Pocket Edges
Finish the curved outer edges of all pocket pieces using a serger or a zigzag stitch to prevent fraying.
3. Sew the Side Seams and Pockets
3a. Place the front and back dress pieces right sides together, aligning the side seams and matching the pocket pieces.
3b. Sew continuously from the armhole, around the pocket curve, and down to the hem on both sides, enclosing the pockets within the side seams.
3c. Finish the seam allowances using a serger or a zigzag stitch and press them toward the back.
4. Prepare the Shoulder Straps
4a. Fold each strap in half lengthwise with right sides together and align the long edges.
4b. Sew along the long edge of each strap.
4c. Trim the seam allowance if needed, turn the straps right side out, and press them flat.
5. Attach the Shoulder Straps
5a. Position the prepared straps on the right side of the front dress at the marked strap placement points. Baste them in place within the seam allowance.
5b. Bring the straps to the back dress pieces and align them with the corresponding back strap markings. Baste them in place.
5c. Check that both straps are not twisted before continuing.
6. Finish the Neckline and Armholes
6a. Prepare the neckline and armhole binding according to the sewing guide.
6b. Sew the binding to the neckline and armholes with right sides together, matching the edges evenly.
6c. Turn the binding to the wrong side, fold the raw edge under, and topstitch neatly to secure it in place.
6d. Press the neckline and armholes flat for a clean finish.
7. Create the Back Elastic Casing
7a. Fold the upper back edge toward the wrong side along the marked casing line.
7b. Sew along the folded edge to create the elastic casing, leaving an opening for inserting the elastic.
7c. Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and thread it through the casing.
7d. Secure both elastic ends with stitching and close the casing opening. Evenly distribute the gathers across the back.
8. Finish the Hem
Fold the bottom hem toward the wrong side following the hem allowance provided in the pattern. Press, fold again to enclose the raw edge, and stitch close to the folded edge to create a neat finish.
9. Final Press
Give the dress a final press, shaping the neckline, shoulder straps, side seams, pockets, and hem. Your Melissa Shoulder Strap Dress is now ready to wear.
