Fabric Cutting and Preparation

Lay Out Your Pattern Pieces

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams. Begin by positioning the pieces on the fabric, ensuring that the grainline arrow runs parallel to the selvage.

Cut Your Fabric

If you are using fabric shears, trace the pattern pieces and then cut them out, cutting away any pen, pencil, or chalk lines. Remember to cut out any notches that appear on the edges. These markings help line up the pieces when you assemble the garment.

Transfer Pattern Markings

Use your marking pen, pencil, or chalk to transfer the markings to the wrong side of the fabric. Mark the center front of pieces cut on the fold, as this will help you align pieces accurately.

Seam Allowance

Please follow the seam allowances as indicated on the pattern file layers. These are provided specifically for each piece to ensure accurate construction.

This pattern uses a 1 cm (or 3/8” inch) seam allowance all around.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

1. Sew the Front Darts

  1. Fold the dart by matching the dart legs with their right sides together on the front piece.

  2. Sew along the seamline on the wrong side of the fabric.

  3. Press the dart flat toward the hem.

  4. Repeat for the second dart on the front piece.

2. Bind the Neckline

2a. Using a binder attachment:

  • Place the binding strip inside the binder.

  • Stitch about 3/8" inch to secure the binding.

  • Insert the front neckline seam allowance into the binding.

  • Sew from one end of the neckline to the other.

  • Trim excess binding.

  • Repeat for the back neckline.

Alternatively, when working with woven fabrics:

  • Fold the binding strip in half lengthwise and press to create a center crease.

  • Fold both raw edges toward the center crease and press.

  • Place the neckline seam allowance between the folded edges.

  • Stitch along the folded edge to secure.

  • Repeat for the back neckline.

3. Sew the Side Seams

  1. Place the front and back pieces right sides together.

3a. Match the side seam notches and pin.

  • Sew along one side seam.

  • Repeat for the opposite side seam.

4. Finish the Dress Hem

  1. Double fold the hem seam allowance:

  • Fold by 0.25 cm.

  • Fold again along the hemline.

  • Sew along the folded edge to finish the raw edge.

5. Create the Adjustable Straps

5a. Fold each strap lengthwise with right sides together and press.

5b. Sew along the long edge seamline.

5c. Turn the strap right side out using a darning needle or slender stick.

5d. Cut a 4.5-inch section from each completed strap and keep the remaining length intact.

Repeat Steps 5a–5d for the second strap.

5e. Slide one long strap through an adjustable slide buckle. Fold approximately 1 inch of the strap end back onto itself and secure with lock stitches and backstitches.

5f. Thread the free end of the same long strap through a strap loop ring, then weave it through the slide buckle.

5g. Take a 4.5-inch strap piece and loop 1 inch of one end through the ring. Secure with lock stitches and backstitches.

Repeat for the second strap set.

6. Prepare the Frills

6a. Place the two Frill 1 pieces right sides together. Align the top, bottom, and side edges. Pin.

6b. Sew along both side edges.

6c. Double fold the bottom edge:

  • Fold by 0.25 cm.

  • Fold again along the seam allowance toward the wrong side.

  • Press and sew along the edge.

6d. Double fold the top edge:

  • Fold by 0.25 cm.

  • Fold again along the seam allowance toward the wrong side.

  • Press and sew along the edge.

Repeat Steps 6a–6d for Frill 2, Frill 3, Frill 4, Frill 5, and Frill 6.

7. Create the Gathers

  1. Set your sewing machine to a stitch length of 5–7 mm.

7a. Sew a basting stitch 1/2 inch below the top edge of Frill 1 at the gather markings.

  • Tie the threads at one end.

  • Pull the threads from the opposite end to create gathers.

Repeat for Frill 2, Frill 3, Frill 4, Frill 5, and Frill 6.

8. Attach the Straps and Frill 1

8a. Place the short strap at the back and the long strap at the front, aligning them with the strap notches on the wrong side of the dress. Pin or baste in place.

8b. Place the wrong side of the prepared Frill 1 on the right side of the neckline. Align the basting stitch line with the bottom edge of the neckline binding and match the side seams. Distribute gathers evenly.

8c. Sew along the basting stitch line around the entire neckline.

9. Attach the Remaining Frills

9a. Place the wrong side of Frill 2 on the right side of the dress at the Frill 2 placement marking. Align the basting stitch line with the corresponding marked placement line and distribute gathers evenly.

9b. Sew along the basting stitch line around the dress.

Repeat the same process for Frill 3, Frill 4, and Frill 5.

For Frill 6, align the basting stitch line with the top edge of the hem fold before sewing.
