Pattern Inventory: What Pieces to Prepare

Cut the following pattern pieces:

  • A. Front – cut ×1 fabric
  • B. Back – cut ×1 fabric
  • C. Front lining – cut ×1 fabric
  • D. Back lining – cut ×1 fabric

If you are printing at home, use the A4/US Letter pattern.

If you are using a copy shop, use the A0 pattern.

Pattern Marking

Before cutting your fabric, familiarize yourself with the pattern markings used throughout the pattern. These include:

  • Grainline
  • Neckline
  • Shoulder
  • Armhole
  • Side seam
  • Hem
  • Seam allowance
  • Gathers
  • Gather notches
  • Lining foldline

These markings help ensure accurate cutting, alignment, and assembly throughout the sewing process.

Cutting Layout

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the recommended cutting layouts for either 45-inch or 60-inch wide fabric.

Ensure the grainline arrows run parallel to the selvage so the garment is cut on grain. Pin the pattern pieces securely before cutting to improve accuracy.

The layouts shown are suitable for non-directional fabrics. If your fabric has a directional print or nap, purchase extra fabric to accommodate the layout. The illustrations use the small size as an example.

Fabric Cutting and Preparation

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams, making sure each grainline arrow runs parallel to the fabric selvage.

Cut out the fabric carefully using fabric shears. If you traced the pattern, trim away any visible marking lines and cut all notches accurately, as these are important for matching pieces during construction.

Transfer all necessary pattern markings, such as fold lines and other construction markings, to the wrong side of the fabric using tailor's chalk or a suitable fabric marker. Mark the center front on pieces cut on the fold to help align the garment accurately during sewing.

Seam Allowance

Please follow the seam allowances as indicated on the pattern file layers. These are provided specifically for each piece to ensure accurate construction.

This pattern uses a 0.8 cm (or 0.32 inch) seam allowance all around.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

1. Create the Side Ruching

1a. Set your sewing machine to a 5–7 mm stitch length. Sew a line of basting stitches between the seam allowances along the gathered section marked on the back side seam.

1b. Tie the thread at one end of the basting stitches. Pull the thread from the opposite end to gather the fabric until the gathered section measures 3.5 inches, as indicated on the pattern.

1c. Repeat the same process for the front top piece to create matching gathers.

2. Sew the Main Top and Lining

Place the front lining and back lining pieces together with right sides facing. Match the notches carefully and sew the shoulder seams followed by the side seams.

Repeat the same process for the front and back main top pieces, making sure the 3.5-inch gathered sections remain evenly distributed at both side seams while sewing.

3. Join the Lining to the Main Top

Insert the lining top inside the main top so that the right sides are together.

Align and pin the neckline, then sew around the neckline.

After stitching, turn the garment so the right side faces outward, with the lining neatly positioned inside the top.

4. Understitch the Neckline

Shift the neckline seam allowance toward the lining.

Sew an understitch close to the seamline through the lining and seam allowance to help the neckline lie flat and prevent the lining from rolling to the outside.

Clip the seam allowance around the neckline and armhole curves.

Turn the top right side out and press the neckline neatly to create a smooth, professional finish.

5. Sew the Armholes

Match the side seams of the main fabric and lining with right sides facing.

Pin around the entire armhole, ensuring the main fabric and lining are aligned correctly. Sew around the armhole to join the layers together.

Understitch the armhole by following the same method used for the neckline in Step 4. This helps keep the lining neatly inside the garment.

Repeat the same process for the second armhole.

6. Clip and Press

Clip the seam allowances around the neckline and armholes.

Turn the top right side out and press all seams neatly to achieve smooth, well-shaped edges.

7. Finish the Hem

Fold and press the hemline of the main top toward the wrong side. Fold the lining foldline in the same way.

Align the hem seam allowances of the main fabric and lining with right sides together. Pin and sew around the hem, leaving an opening of approximately 2–3 inches so the garment can be turned right side out.

When sewing the right-facing section, small clusters of fabric will naturally form. Leave enough space to comfortably pull the garment through the opening after sewing.

Turn the garment right side out through the opening.

Use a hand blind stitch to close the remaining opening neatly.

8. Close the Opening

Use a hand blind stitch to neatly sew the remaining opening closed, creating a clean and nearly invisible finish.
