The pattern includes markings for:

  • Grainline
  • Seam allowance
  • Side seam
  • Shoulder
  • Neckline
  • Armhole
  • Hem
  • Center front
  • Across front

Cutting Layout

Keep these guidelines in mind:

  • Position every pattern piece so the grainline arrow runs parallel to the fabric selvage.
  • Pin the pattern pieces securely before cutting for greater accuracy.
  • The layouts shown are intended for non-directional fabrics.
  • Purchase additional fabric if you're using fabrics with a nap or directional prints.
  • The cutting layouts shown use the Age 2Y size for illustration.
  • Separate cutting layouts are provided for both 45-inch and 60-inch fabric widths.

Fabric Cutting and Preparation

Preparing your fabric carefully before sewing helps ensure accurate cutting and professional-looking results.

Lay Out Your Pattern Pieces

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams, ensuring each grainline arrow runs parallel to the fabric selvage.

Cut Your Fabric

If you're using fabric shears, trace around the pattern pieces before cutting. Remove any pen, pencil, or chalk lines as you cut, and remember to clip all notches since they help align the pieces during construction.

Transfer Pattern Markings

Transfer all markings, including circles, buttonholes, and fold lines, onto the wrong side of the fabric using chalk or another suitable marking tool. Mark the center front on pieces cut on the fold to help align the garment accurately during sewing.

Seam Allowance

Use the seam allowances marked on each pattern piece. These are precisely included to ensure proper fit.

This pattern uses a 1 cm (3/8") seam allowance all around, and a 0.6 cm (1/4") seam allowance all around the collar and neck binding.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

1. Create the Gathers

Set your sewing machine stitch length to 5–7 mm to create gathering stitches.

1a.

Sew gathering stitches along the seam allowance of the across front edge of the Front (Pattern A). Tie the threads at one end and gently pull the threads from the opposite end to create gathers.

1b.

Repeat the same process along the across back edge of the Back (Pattern C).

1c.

Repeat again between the gather notches on the sleeve cap of the Sleeve (Pattern H).

Note: The gathers for the sleeve cuffs will be created after the sleeve side seams have been sewn.

Pro Tip

  • Pin the pieces before sewing to improve accuracy.
  • Press the pattern pieces after every step for a smoother sewing experience.
  • Refer to the Pattern Marking page to locate seamlines, notches, and key reference points before sewing.

2. Attach the Front and Back Yokes

2a.

Place the Front Yoke (Pattern B) onto the gathered Front (Pattern A) with the right sides together. Adjust the gathers evenly so they match the length of the across front seamline.

2b.

Sew along the across front seamline. Press the seam open.

2c.

Repeat the same process with the Back Yoke (Pattern D) and the gathered Back (Pattern C), sewing along the across back seamline and pressing the seam open.

3. Prepare the Peter Pan Collar

3a.

Place both Collar (Pattern E) pieces with their right sides together. Align the outer collar seamline and pin in place.

3b.

Sew around the outer collar seamline. Clip the seam allowance evenly around the curves.

3c.

Turn the collar right side out and press.

Note: The sewing guide includes a separate Peter Pan Collar tutorial for additional guidance.

4. Finish the Placket and Collar

4a.

Place the prepared bodice right side up. Align the raw edge of the prepared collar with the neckline edge of the bodice.

Fold both front plackets toward the wrong side along the fold notches so the folded plackets overlap the collar ends.

4b.

Fold the placket seam allowances toward the wrong side and press.

Place the Neck Binding (Pattern F) right side down over the collar and neckline, aligning the short ends of the neck binding with the folded placket edges. Pin in place and sew along the neckline.

4c.

Carefully clip the neckline seam allowance around the curves without cutting through the stitching.

Fold the neck binding over the seam allowance toward the wrong side, enclosing all raw edges. Ensure the raw edges of the plackets are tucked neatly inside the binding before pinning and stitching the binding closed.

4d.

Topstitch close to the folded edge of the neck binding to secure it.

Continue topstitching neatly along both front placket edges to finish the neckline and front opening.

5. Attach the Shoulders

Place one prepared Front and the Back with their right sides together.

Align the shoulder seams and sew.

Repeat for the second front piece on the opposite shoulder.

6. Attach the Sleeves

6a.

Lay the bodice flat with the shoulder seams opened.

Place one Sleeve (Pattern H) onto the bodice with the right sides together.

6b.

Align the sleeve cap with the armhole. Spread the gathers evenly between the gather notches along the front armhole.

6c.

Sew around the armhole.

6d.

Repeat Steps 6a–6c for the second sleeve.

7. Sew the Side Seams

Turn the night gown wrong side out.

Align the side seams from the sleeve hem to the bottom hem. Pin in place and sew both side seams.

Press the side seams open after sewing.

8. Prepare the Cuffs

8a.

Fold each Cuff (Pattern G) in half lengthwise with the right sides together.

8b.

Sew the short edges together.

8c.

Fold both long edges toward the wrong side and press.

8d.

Fold the cuff in half with the right side facing outward.

9. Attach the Sleeve Cuffs

9a.

Set your sewing machine stitch length to 5–7 mm and sew gathering stitches along the sleeve hem seam allowance.

Tie the threads at one end and pull the opposite threads to create even gathers.

9b.

Adjust the gathers until the sleeve opening matches the cuff.

9c.

Insert the raw edge of the gathered sleeve into the folded cuff.

Match the cuff seam with the sleeve underarm seam, distribute the gathers evenly, and sew around the sleeve hem to attach the cuff.

Repeat for the second sleeve.

10. Finish the Hem

Double-fold the hem.

First fold 1/4" of the hem allowance toward the wrong side.

Then fold again along the hem seamline toward the wrong side and press.

Sew along the folded edge to finish the hem, preferably starting at one side seam and sewing around the garment until you return to the same side seam.

11. Attach the Buttons and Create the Buttonholes

Use a buttonhole presser foot to create evenly spaced buttonholes using a zig-zag stitch.

Sew the buttons opposite the buttonholes, matching the button markings on the pattern pieces.
