  • Grainline
  • Seam allowance
  • Neckline
  • Shoulder
  • Armhole
  • Armhole notch
  • Armhole (above notch)
  • Side seam
  • Waist

These markings help align the garment accurately throughout construction and make assembly much easier.

Cutting Layout

Arrange your pattern pieces according to the cutting layout provided for your chosen fabric width.

Keep these guidelines in mind:

  • Position every pattern piece so the grainline arrow runs parallel to the fabric selvage.
  • Pin the pattern pieces securely before cutting for greater accuracy.
  • The layouts shown are intended for non-directional fabrics.
  • Purchase additional fabric if you're using fabrics with a nap or directional prints.
  • The cutting layouts shown use the Age 2Y size for illustration.
  • Separate cutting layouts are provided for both 45-inch and 60-inch fabric widths.

Fabric Cutting and Preparation

Preparing your fabric before sewing helps ensure accurate cutting and professional-looking results.

Lay Out Your Pattern Pieces

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams, ensuring each grainline arrow runs parallel to the fabric selvage.

Cut Your Fabric

Prewash your fabric before cutting to prevent shrinkage after sewing, then press it to remove any creases. If you're using fabric shears, trace around the pattern pieces before cutting. Remove any pen, pencil, or chalk lines as you cut, and remember to clip all notches since they help align the pieces during assembly.

Transfer Pattern Markings

Transfer all markings, including circles, buttonholes, and fold lines, onto the wrong side of the fabric using chalk or another suitable marking tool. Mark the center front on pieces cut on the fold to help align the garment accurately during sewing.

Seam Allowance

Use the seam allowances marked on each pattern piece. These are precisely included to ensure proper fit.

This pattern uses a 1 cm (3/8") seam allowance all around, a 1.3 cm (1/2") seam allowance at the bottom hem, no seam allowance on the bow tie, and no seam allowance on the back binding.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

Sleeveless Dress

1. Finish the Front Neckline

1a.

Serge or overlock the outer raw edge of the Front Top Facing (Pattern D).

1b.

Place the Front Top Facing (Pattern D) and Front Top (Pattern C) with their right sides together, aligning the neckline edges.

1c.

Sew along the neckline seamline.

1d.

Clip the corners to help the facing turn neatly. Clip the seam allowance along the neckline every 1–2 cm (½–¾") so the neckline turns smoothly and lies flat.

1e.

Turn the front top facing to the wrong side and press the neckline.

Pro Tip

  • Pin the pieces before sewing to improve accuracy.
  • Press the pattern pieces after every step for a smoother sewing experience.
  • Refer to the Pattern Marking page to locate seamlines, notches, and key reference points before sewing.

2. Attach the Front Waist

2a.

Place the prepared Front Top (from Step 1) and the Front (Pattern A) with their right sides together, aligning the waist seams.

2b.

Sew along the waist seamline.

2c.

Press the seam allowances open.

2d. (Optional – Lace Attachment)

Cut the lace to the front waist length and place it along the waistline on the right side of the prepared front dress panel.

Sew parallel rows along both edges of the lace to secure it.

3. Finish the Back Neckline

3a.

Place the Back Binding (Pattern G) and Back (Pattern B) with their right sides together, aligning the neckline edge. Pin in place.

3b.

Sew along the neckline seamline.

3c.

Clip the neckline seam allowance, turn the back binding toward the wrong side, and press the neckline.

3d.

Fold the remaining raw edge of the back binding inward by 1/4" (6 mm) and press. Stitch close to the folded edge to secure the binding.

3e.

Sew along the folded edge to finish the binding and press once more.

4. Finish the Shoulders

4a.

Place the prepared front dress panel and back dress panel with their right sides together, aligning the shoulder seams.

4b.

Sew both shoulder seams and repeat on the opposite side.

5. Finish the Armholes

5a.

Mark a notch on the front armhole so it matches the notch on the back armhole. Keep it the same distance from the shoulder seam as the notch on the back piece.

Clip both notches up to the seamline. The section between the two notches forms the armhole seamline.

5b.

Press the shoulder seams open. Fold the armhole raw edge 1/4" toward the wrong side and press.

5c.

Fold the armhole again along the seamline toward the wrong side. Press and sew close to the folded edge to finish the armhole.

Repeat these steps for the opposite armhole.

6. Attach the Side Seams

Keep the dress wrong side out.

Align the side seams from the armhole notch to the bottom hem. Pin in place and sew both side seams.

Press the side seams open after sewing.

7. Reinforce the Armhole (Optional)

Lay the dress flat so the side seam is centered.

Sew a few reinforcing stitches at the armhole seam intersection to strengthen the seam.

8. Finish the Hem

Double-fold the bottom hem.

First fold 1/4" of the hem allowance toward the wrong side, then fold again along the hem seamline toward the wrong side.

Press well.

Sew along the folded edge to finish the hem, preferably starting at one side seam and sewing all the way around until you return to the same side seam.

5. Prepare the Flutter Sleeves

Option A – Standard Sleeve Hem

5a.

Double-fold the sleeve hem by first folding 1/4" of the sleeve hem allowance toward the wrong side, then folding again along the hem seamline.

Sew close to the folded edge to finish the sleeve hem.

5b.

Set your sewing machine stitch length to 5–7 mm and sew gathering stitches along the sleeve armhole seam allowance. Tie the threads at one end.

5c.

Pull the thread from the opposite end to create even gathers.

Option B – Lace Sleeve Hem

5a.

Place the lace on the right side of the sleeve, align it with the sleeve hem, and sew.

5b.

Spread the sleeve and lace apart from the sleeve hemline. Press the seam allowance toward the lace and edgestitch close to the sleeve hem seam on the sleeve side to keep the seam allowance flat.

6. Finish the Armholes

6a.

Mark a notch on the front armhole so it matches the notch on the back armhole. Clip both notches up to the seamline.

6b.

Place the prepared flutter sleeve onto the right side of the armhole. Distribute the gathers evenly between the armhole notches, pin, and sew along the armhole seamline.

6c.

Turn the sleeve away from the armhole and press the seam flat.

Sew along the edge of the armhole on the sleeve to create the flutter sleeve finish.

7. Attach the Side Seams

Keep the dress wrong side out.

Align the side seams from the armhole notch to the bottom hem. Pin in place and sew both side seams.

8. Reinforce the Armhole (Optional)

Lay the dress flat with the side seam centered.

Sew a few backstitches at the armhole seam to reinforce the seam.

9. Finish the Bottom Hem

Option A – Standard Hem

Double-fold the hem by folding 1/4" of the hem allowance toward the wrong side, then folding again along the hem seamline.

Press and sew around the hem, starting and ending at the same side seam.

Option B – Lace Hem

9a.

Place the lace on the right side of the dress hem. Align and sew along the bottom hem seamline.

9b.

Spread the dress and lace apart. Press the seam allowance toward the lace and sew along the edge of the bottom hem with the seam allowance underneath.

10. Prepare the Bow Tie Strap

10a.

Fold the Bow Tie (Pattern F) in half lengthwise with the wrong sides facing out and press to create a crease.

10b.

Sew along the long edge and one short edge using a lockstitch, keeping the stitching 1/4" from the edge.

10c.

Turn the bow tie right side out using a loop turner and press.

10d.

Fold 1/4" of the remaining open seam allowance inside the bow tie.

10e.

Close the opening using either a blind stitch or topstitch close to the edge.

11. Create the Bow Tie

11b.

Cross the left loop over the right loop.

11c.

Bring the left loop underneath and through the opening behind the right loop.

11d.

Pull both loops outward to tighten the knot.

11e.

Adjust the loops and tails until the bow is even and symmetrical.
