Cutting Layout

Arrange all pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams to ensure every piece is cut on grain. Position each grainline parallel to the fabric selvage before pinning the pattern pieces securely in place.

Separate cutting layouts are provided for the top and the overall, both based on 60-inch-wide fabric. The layouts are intended for non-directional fabrics. If you're using fabric with a directional print or nap, purchase additional fabric to accommodate the layout.

Fabric Cutting and Preparation

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams before cutting. Make sure every grainline arrow runs parallel to the fabric selvage for accurate results.

If you're using fabric shears, trace around each pattern piece before cutting. Remove any pen, pencil, or chalk lines as you cut, and clip all notches carefully. These markings help align the garment accurately during construction.

Transfer all pattern markings—including circles, buttonholes, fold lines, and center front markings—to the wrong side of the fabric using a suitable marking tool before sewing.

Seam Allowance

Please follow the seam allowances as indicated on the pattern file layers. These are provided specifically for each piece to ensure accurate construction.

This pattern uses:

  • 1 cm (3/8") seam allowance all around.
  • 0.8 cm (1/4") seam allowance all around the neck band, yoke, and waistband.
  • 1.3 cm (1/2") seam allowance at the sleeve hem and all around the bodice.
  • 2 cm (3/4") hem allowance at the bottom hem.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

Top

1. Attach the Shoulders

1a. Place one back bodice piece on top of the front bodice with their right sides together. Sew along the shoulder seam.

1b. Repeat Step 1a for the opposite shoulder using the remaining back bodice piece.

2. Attach the Sleeves

2a. Fold the sleeve in half, aligning the side seams, and clip the armhole at the center fold.

2b. Place the sleeve onto the opened bodice with right sides together, aligning the armholes. Match the sleeve's center notch with the shoulder seam, and align the back armhole notch on the sleeve with the back armhole of the bodice. Pin along the curve.

2c. Sew along the armhole seam.

2d. Repeat Steps 2a–2c for the second sleeve on the opposite side of the bodice.

3. Attach the Side Seams

Align the side seams of the bodice and sleeves. Sew along the seamline in one continuous seam on each side.

4. Finish the Center Back Edges

Double-fold the center back seam allowance toward the wrong side—first by 0.25 cm, then again from the seamline. Sew along the folded edge to finish the raw edge.

Repeat the same process for both center back edges.

5. Finish the Bottom Hem

Double-fold the bottom hem of the bodice toward the wrong side—first by 0.25 cm, then again at the hemline. Sew along the folded edge to finish the raw edge neatly.

6. Finish the Sleeve Hems

Double-fold each sleeve hem toward the wrong side—first by 0.25 cm, then again at the hemline. Sew along the folded edge to finish the raw edge.

7. Prepare and Attach the Neck Band

7a. Fold the neck band in half along its width with the right side inside, aligning the edges.

7b. Sew both short side seams.

7c. Turn the neck band right side out and press.

7d. Place the neck band on the right side of the bodice neckline. Align the open edge of the neck band with the neckline edge, matching both ends of the band with the center back neckline. Sew along the neckline seam.

7e. Flip the neck band upward and press. Understitch by sewing along the neckline seam allowance to help keep the neck band neatly in place.

8. Attach the Velcro

Measure the finished center back opening from the neckline to the hem and cut the Velcro to the same length.

Position the rough side of the Velcro on the left center back, on the right side of the fabric. Position the soft side on the right center back, on the wrong side of the fabric.

Sew around the edges of both Velcro strips to secure them to the garment.

Overall

9. Finish the Crotch Seams

9a. Place the two front bottom pieces right sides together, aligning the crotch edges.

9b. Sew along the crotch seam.

9c. Repeat Steps 9a and 9b for the two back bottom pieces.

10. Finish the Side Seams

10a. Open the stitched front bottom pieces from the crotch seam. Repeat the same for the back bottom pieces. Place the prepared front and back pieces right sides together, aligning both side seams.

10b. Sew both side seams.

11. Sew the Inseams

Align the inseam edges and sew the inseam together.

12. Prepare the Front and Back Yoke Panels

12a. Place the two front yoke pieces right sides together and align all the edges. Sew around all edges except the waistline.

Turn the front yoke right side out through the open waist edge.

12b. Repeat Step 12a for the two back yoke pieces.

13. Prepare and Attach the Waistband

13a. Fold the waistband in half along the center of the long edge with the right side inside. Align the short edges and sew them together to form a waistband.

13b. Turn the waistband right side out and fold it along the center of the short edge to create a crease.

13c. Open the prepared waistband. Place it over the waist of the prepared bottoms, aligning both waistlines. Sew along the waist seam.

13d. Cut two pieces of 5 mm elastic, each measuring 2 1/2 inches. Position each elastic piece on the waistband seam allowance between the elastic notches. Align the front notch with one end of the elastic, the back notch with the other end, and the center of the elastic with the side seam. Secure both ends with a few backstitches.

13e. Fold the seam allowance of the open waistband edge toward the wrong side and press.

13f. Fold the waistband over to the opposite side of the waist seam so the folded edge covers the raw seam allowance. Sew approximately 1/4 inch from the folded edge to secure the waistband neatly.

14. Finish the Hems

Double-fold the hem of each pant leg toward the wrong side—first by 0.25 cm, then again at the hemline. Sew along the folded edge to finish the raw edges.

Repeat for both pant legs.

15. Attach the Front and Back Yokes

15a. Place the prepared back yoke on the wrong side of the back of the overalls. Align the waist seam of the back yoke with the waist seam of the back bottom so the yoke sits between the two elastic notches. Sew along the waist seam.

15b. Repeat Step 15a for the front waist using the prepared front yoke.

16. Create the Buttons and Buttonholes

Sew two buttons at the designated markings on the front yokes, and sew matching buttonholes on the back yokes to complete the dungaree.
