The sample gown shown in the sewing guide is made from embroidered mesh fabric.

This fabric is recommended because it offers:

  • Sheer appearance with textured embroidery
  • Light structure with a soft drape
  • Airy and breathable qualities

For the lining, use lightweight fabrics such as:

  • Satin
  • Rayon poplin
  • Voile
  • Chiffon

For the optional petticoat, use lightweight tulle.

Size Charts

Check the size charts and measure yourself to select the correct size, using the garment and body measurement tables in the guide.

Verify how much fabric you need by referencing the fabric yield table in the guide.

Pattern Inventory: What Pieces to Prepare

Prepare the following pattern pieces before cutting your fabric:

  • A. Front bodice — Cut 1 lining + 1 net fabric
  • B. Back bodice — Cut 2 lining + 2 net fabric
  • C. Sleeve band — Cut 2 lining + 2 net fabric
  • D. Shoulder strap — Cut 2 lining + 2 net fabric
  • E. Petticoat — Cut 2 tulle fabric (optional)
  • F. Bottom lining — Cut 2 lining fabric
  • G. Bottom — Cut 2 net fabric

If you're printing the pattern at home, use the A4/US Letter version. For copy shop printing, use the A0 version.

Pattern Marking

Transfer all pattern markings carefully before sewing. The Amora Princess Gown pattern includes markings for:

  • Grainlines
  • Neckline
  • Shoulders
  • Armholes
  • Center back
  • Side seams
  • Side edges
  • Top edge
  • Bottom edge
  • Waist
  • Gather line
  • Center
  • Hem

Cutting Layout

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams to ensure every piece is cut on grain. Position each grainline parallel to the fabric selvage before pinning the pattern pieces securely in place.

Separate cutting layouts are provided for the net fabric and the lining fabric, both based on 60-inch-wide fabric. The layouts are intended for non-directional fabrics. If you're using fabric with a directional print or nap, purchase additional fabric to accommodate the layout.

Fabric Cutting and Preparation

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams before cutting. Make sure every grainline arrow runs parallel to the fabric selvage for accurate results.

If you're using fabric shears, trace around each pattern piece before cutting. Remove any pen, pencil, or chalk lines as you cut, and clip all notches carefully. These markings are important for aligning the garment during construction.

Transfer all pattern markings—including circles, buttonholes, fold lines, and the center front marking—to the wrong side of the fabric using a suitable marking tool. These reference marks will help ensure accurate assembly throughout the sewing process.

Seam Allowance

Please follow the seam allowances as indicated on the pattern file layers. These are provided specifically for each piece to ensure accurate construction.

This pattern uses:

  • 1 cm (3/8") seam allowance all around.
  • 1.3 cm (1/2") seam allowance at the top edge of the bottom.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

1. Prepare the Shoulder Straps

1a. Place one net shoulder strap piece and one lining shoulder strap piece right sides together. Align all the edges and sew along both long edges.

1b. Trim the excess seam allowance to reduce bulk. Turn the strap right side out and press with an iron.

Repeat the same process for the second shoulder strap using the remaining net and lining pieces.

2. Prepare the Sleeve Bands

2a. Place one net sleeve band and one lining sleeve band right sides together, aligning all the edges.

2b. Sew along both the top and bottom edges.

2c. Trim the excess seam allowance to reduce bulk. Turn the sleeve band right side out and press.

Repeat the same process for the remaining sleeve bands.

3. Finish the Bodice

3a. Place the net side of both prepared shoulder straps on the right side of the front net bodice. Align the strap ends with the shoulder edges and pin them in place.

3b. Place one sleeve band on top of the front bodice with its net side facing down, sandwiching the shoulder strap between the sleeve band and the bodice. Align the side edge of the sleeve band with the armhole and pin.

3c. Repeat Step 3b on the opposite side using the second sleeve band.

3d. Place the front lining bodice on top with its right side facing up, so the shoulder straps and sleeve bands are sandwiched between the front bodice and the lining. Pin around the neckline and armholes.

3e. Sew continuously from one armhole, around the neckline, and to the opposite armhole, securing the shoulder straps and sleeve bands between the bodice and lining. Turn the lining to the wrong side of the front net bodice and press.

The front of the bodice should show the right side of the net fabric, while the inside should show the wrong side of the lining.

3f. Place the loose ends of the right shoulder strap (lining side) and the right sleeve band (lining side) on the wrong side of the right back lining bodice. Align the shoulder strap end with the neckline near the armhole and the sleeve band end with the top of the armhole. Pin in place.

3g. Place the right side of the right back net bodice over the wrong side of the right back lining bodice, aligning all edges. The shoulder strap and sleeve band ends should be sandwiched between the two layers. Pin securely.

3h. Sew from the armhole to the neckline.

3i. Repeat Steps 3f–3h for the left side of the bodice using the remaining shoulder strap, sleeve band, and back bodice pieces.

When the back bodice is turned right side out:

  • The net fabric should be on the outside.
  • The lining should be on the inside against the doll.
  • The right side of the net fabric should be visible on the outside, while the wrong side of the lining remains inside the garment.

4. Finish the Side Seams

4a. Open the front bodice and front lining from the armhole seam so they lie flat. Repeat the same for the back bodice and back lining.

Arrange the pieces so the front and back bodice pieces are right sides together, while the front and back lining pieces have their wrong sides facing each other. Align both the bodice and lining side seams.

Tip: Spread the armhole seam allowances open so all layers lie flat before sewing.

4b. Sew along the side seam, joining both the bodice and lining layers together.

4c. Repeat the process for the opposite side of the bodice.

5. Prepare the Bottom Lining Panel

5a. Place the front and back bottom lining panels right sides together, aligning one side seam.

5b. Sew along one side seam only.

6. Finish the Hem of the Lining

Spread the stitched lining pieces open. Double-fold the hem toward the wrong side—first by 0.25 cm, then again at the hemline. Sew along the folded edge to neatly finish the raw edge.

7. Prepare Gathers on the Net Skirt

7a. Place both net bottom pieces right sides together, aligning one side seam.

7b. Sew along the side seam, then open the pieces out from the sewn edge so they lie flat.

7c. Set your sewing machine to a 5–7 mm stitch length. Sew a row of basting stitches within the waist seam allowance of the net skirt.

7d. Tie the threads at one end of the basting stitch. Pull the thread from the opposite end to create even gathers along the waist.

8. Prepare the Skirt

8a. Lay the bottom lining open with the right side facing up. Place the wrong side of the gathered net skirt on top of the lining, matching the waist edges. Spread the gathers evenly across the waist.

8b. Sew the net skirt to the lining approximately 1/4 inch above the existing seamline to hold both layers together.

9. Attach the Bodice and Skirt

9a. Place the prepared skirt on the front bodice with right sides together. Align the waist edges across the bodice, wrapping the skirt around from one center back edge to the other. Match each end of the skirt waist to the corresponding center back waist edge of the bodice and pin in place.

9b. Sew along the waistline to attach the skirt to the bodice.

10. Finish the Zipper

Place the right side of the zipper on the center back opening of the dress, starting 1/4 inch below the top edge. Pin or baste the zipper in place.

Sew close to the zipper teeth, stitching in the groove between the zipper teeth and the zipper tape. Repeat the same process for the opposite zipper tape on the other back edge of the dress.

11. Finish the Center Back Seam

Align the center back edges of the dress, beginning at the bottom of the zipper and continuing to the hem.

First, sew the net layers together with their right sides facing each other. Then repeat the same process for the lining layers, sewing them together separately.

12. Prepare the Optional Petticoat

The optional petticoat adds volume and creates a fuller ball gown silhouette. It is sewn separately as an undergarment and can also be worn under other doll dresses.

12a. Place the two petticoat pieces right sides together and align the side seams.

12b. Sew along both side seams to form a tube.

12c. Fold the waist edge toward the wrong side twice—first by 0.25 cm, then again at the waistline. Sew along the folded edge to create an elastic casing, leaving a small opening.

12d. Use a safety pin to insert the 6.5-inch elastic through the casing until both ends extend from the opening.

12e. Overlap the elastic ends by approximately 1/2 inch and secure them together with a zigzag stitch.

12f. Sew the opening closed to fully enclose the elastic and complete the petticoat.
