If you're using fabric shears, trace around each pattern piece before cutting. Cut away any pen, pencil, or chalk lines and carefully clip all notches, as these markings will help align the garment during construction.
Transfer all pattern markings—including circles, buttonholes, fold lines, and the center front marking—to the wrong side of the fabric using chalk or a fabric marking tool. These markings will help ensure accurate assembly throughout the sewing process.
Seam Allowance

3. Prepare and Attach the Front Placket

Tip: To locate the center front of the neckline, fold the front bodice in half, matching the armholes and neckline edges. Make a small notch at the fold to mark the center front. Similarly, mark the center of the front placket by making a notch along its short edge.
4. Finish the Front Neck Binding
4a. Place the second neck binding piece on the front bodice with right sides together. Align one long edge of the binding with the neckline and sew along the neckline, matching the seamlines.
4b. Fold the seam allowance on the remaining long edge of the binding toward its wrong side and press.
4c. Fold the binding over to the opposite side of the neckline seam so the folded edge covers the raw seam allowance on the wrong side of the neckline. Sew along the open folded edge to secure the binding and create a clean neckline finish.
5. Join the Front and Back Bodice
Place the front and back bodice pieces right sides together. Align the side seams and sew both side seams to complete the bodice.
6. Prepare the Bottom Skirt
6a. Double-fold the bottom hem of the skirt piece toward the wrong side—first by 3/8 inch, then again from the hemline. Pin in place and sew 1/4 inch from the folded edge to finish the hem.
6b. Fold the skirt in half at the center of the waist, aligning the side seams. Sew the side seam together.
6c. Set your sewing machine to a 5–7 mm stitch length. Sew a row of basting stitches within the waist seam allowance, starting at one shirring notch and continuing around the skirt until you reach the second shirring notch. Leave the shorter section between the two notches unstitched.
Tie the threads at one end of the basting stitch. Pull the thread from the opposite end to gather the skirt evenly.
7. Attach the Bodice and Skirt
7a. Turn the prepared bodice right side out and insert it into the skirt, which should be wrong side out. Align the waist seams and pin them together. Match the shirring notches on the skirt with the stretched shirred section on the back bodice.
7b. Sew along the waist seam to join the bodice and skirt.
7c. Pull the bodice out through the skirt so the dress is right side out, then press the waist seam neatly with an iron.
8. Prepare the Sleeves
8a. Double-fold the back armhole edge of each sleeve toward the wrong side—first by 1/4 inch and then again from the seamline. Pin and sew 1/4 inch from the folded edge to create an elastic casing.
8b. Repeat the same process on the sleeve hem to create the hem casing.
8c. Fold the sleeve in half with the right side inside. Align the side seams and sew the seamline, making sure not to sew beyond the side seam markings.
8d. Insert a 3 1/2-inch elastic strip into the back armhole casing and a 4 1/2-inch elastic strip into the sleeve hem casing.
8e. Stretch the elastic ends slightly and pin them at both ends of each casing. Secure the elastic by sewing a few backstitches at both ends of the sleeve hem casing and the back armhole casing.
Repeat Steps 8a–8e for the second sleeve.
9. Attach the Sleeves
9a. Place the front armhole of the prepared sleeve onto the armhole of the dress with right sides together. Align the armhole seamlines and pin.
