Supplies & Notions

Prepare the following before you begin sewing:

  • Light to medium-weight knit fabric with 30–50% stretch
  • 3-ply polyester thread
  • 1-inch elastic band
  • Sewing machine
  • Serger (optional)
  • Coverstitch machine (optional)
  • Sewing needles
  • Fabric shears
  • Thread cutter
  • Tape measure
  • Chalk
  • Pins
  • Iron

If you don't have a serger, use a zig-zag stitch with the presser foot setting lower than 1 and, if available, a walking foot. A twin needle or narrow zig-zag stitch can be used as an alternative to a coverstitch machine. Always test your stitches on a fabric sample before sewing the final garment.

Fabric Recommendations

The sewing guide recommends light to medium-weight knit fabrics with 30–50% stretch, including:

  • Jersey
  • Rib fabric
  • Fleece
  • Terry

The sample garment shown in the sewing guide is made from poly single jersey fabric, which is recommended because it is:

  • Soft, smooth, and slightly stretchy
  • Drapes naturally
  • Lightweight, breathable, and crease-resistant
  • Ideal for warm weather
  • Easy to sew with a stretch needle

Size Charts

Check the size charts and measure yourself to select the correct size, using the garment and body measurement tables in the guide.

Verify how much fabric you need by referencing the fabric yield table in the guide.

Pattern Inventory: What Pieces to Prepare

Prepare the following pattern pieces:

  • A. Front — Cut 2 Fabric
  • B. Back — Cut 2 Fabric
  • C. Side Pocket — Cut 4 Fabric
  • D. Back Welt Pocket — Cut 1 Fabric
  • E. Pocket Bone — Cut 1 Fabric

Pattern Marking

Before cutting your fabric, familiarize yourself with the markings shown on each pattern piece to ensure accurate alignment during construction.

The pattern includes markings for:

  • Grainline
  • Waist
  • Hip line
  • Thigh line
  • Crotch
  • Inseam
  • Side seam
  • Hem
  • Pocket opening
  • Pocket curve
  • Pocket notch
  • Welt pocket marking
  • Welt pocket top line
  • Welt pocket bottom line
  • Welt pocket notch
  • Welt center
  • Center
  • Side
  • Top
  • Bottom

Cutting Layout

Arrange your pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams provided in the sewing guide before pinning them to the fabric.

The layouts are designed for both 45-inch and 60-inch fabric widths and are intended for non-directional fabrics. If your fabric has a directional print or nap, purchase additional fabric to accommodate the layout.

Ensure every grainline arrow runs parallel to the fabric selvage. The illustrated cutting layouts use US Size 40 as the example.

Fabric Cutting and Preparation

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams, ensuring each grainline arrow runs parallel to the selvage before pinning.

If using fabric shears, trace the pattern pieces before cutting. Carefully trim away any pen, pencil, or chalk lines, and remember to cut all notches, as they help align the pieces accurately during construction.

Transfer all pattern markings—including circles, buttonholes, and fold lines—to the wrong side of the fabric using chalk, a marking pen, or a fabric pencil. Mark the center front of pieces cut on the fold to help with accurate alignment during sewing.

Seam Allowance

Please follow the seam allowances as indicated on the pattern file layers. These are provided specifically for each piece to ensure accurate construction.

This pattern uses a 1 cm (3/8") seam allowance all around and a 3.2 cm (1 1/4") seam allowance at the hem.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

1. Attach the Side Pockets

1a. Place the Front (Pattern A) and Side Pocket (Pattern C) pieces together with right sides facing each other. Sew the pocket opening seamline between the pocket notches, then clip the corners.

1b. Turn the side pocket piece so the wrong sides are facing each other. Press it flat to create an open rectangular shape, then topstitch along the rectangular edge.

1c. Place the second Side Pocket (Pattern C) over the stitched pocket piece with right sides together, matching the edges and pocket notches. Overlock along the curved edge of the pocket pieces.

1d. Sew the remaining seamline of the front piece and pocket together using a lock stitch, leaving the open rectangular pocket opening.

Repeat the same process for the second front piece.

2. Construct the Back Welt Pocket

2a. Fold the Pocket Bone (Pattern E) in half along the center line with the wrong side inside. Press and sew along the welt seam.

2b. Place the Back Welt Pocket (Pattern D) onto the right back leg with right sides together. Align the pocket top seamline with the top welt marking and sew along the top welt line.

2c. Fold the top seam allowance of the welt pocket toward the wrong side to create space for the pocket bone.

2d. Position the prepared pocket bone along the bottom welt marking, ensuring the folded edge faces the hem. Sew along the bottom welt line.

2e. Carefully fold the pocket bone away from the marked line. Cut the center opening and make diagonal V-shaped cuts into each corner.

2f. Fold the trimmed edges to the wrong side and press to create a neat rectangular opening. Pull both the welt pocket and the pocket lining through the opening to the wrong side.

2g. Check that the right side of the back leg shows a clean, rectangular welt opening.

2h. Fold the crotch side of the back leg aside to expose the pocket bone and trimmed corners. Stitch along both short ends of the welt opening to secure the pocket bone and V-shaped corners.

2i. Turn the back leg to the wrong side and fold the pocket lining aside to expose the pocket bone.

2j. Fold the welt pocket along the center marking with right sides together. Align the bottom edge of the welt pocket with the bottom edge of the pocket bone and stitch to form the pocket pouch.

2k. Fold the pocket lining downward toward the hem and sew around the remaining sides to complete the pocket pouch and finish the welt pocket.

3. Sew the Front and Back Crotch Seams

Place both Back (Pattern B) pieces together with right sides facing.

Align the crotch seam and overlock the pieces together.

Repeat the same process for the two front pieces.

4. Sew the Side Seams

Place the prepared back over the prepared front with right sides together.

Sew both side seams to join the front and back pieces.

5. Sew the Inseam

Align the inseam with the right sides facing each other and pin if necessary.

Sew continuously from one hem through the crotch and down to the opposite hem to complete the inseam.

6. Attach the Waistband

6a. Cut an elastic band 2–4 inches shorter than your waist measurement, depending on the desired fit, and add 1 cm seam allowance to both ends. For example, for a 28-inch waist and a regular fit, use a 26-inch elastic plus seam allowances.

Overlap the elastic ends.

6b. Join the elastic ends using a zig-zag stitch.

Alternative: Place a 1.5-inch muslin strip beneath the joined elastic ends and secure them with a zig-zag stitch to reduce bulk. Do not add seam allowance to the muslin strip.

6c. Position the elastic along the waist seam allowance on the wrong side of the shorts. Divide both the waistband and elastic into four equal sections (side seams, center front, and center back) and pin evenly. Overlock the elastic to the waistband.

6d. Fold the waist seam allowance toward the wrong side, enclosing the elastic. Align the overlocked edge with the waist seamline and sew along the center of the folded waistband using a lock stitch.

6e. Coverstitch along the folded waist seamline from the right side so the neat double row of stitching is visible on the outside, securing the waistband closed.

7. Finish the Hem

Fold each shorts hem toward the wrong side and press.

Coverstitch the hem from the right side so the neat double row of stitching is visible on the front.

Repeat the same process for the opposite leg.
