-
Pin pattern pieces securely before cutting.
-
The layouts provided are nondirectional.
-
Purchase additional fabric when working with directional prints or fabrics with nap.
-
Separate layouts are provided for both 45-inch and 60-inch fabric widths.
-
The illustrated layouts use a Large size for demonstration.
Fabric Cutting and Preparation
Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams. Begin by positioning the pieces on the fabric, ensuring that the grainline arrow runs parallel to the selvage.
If you are using fabric shears, trace the pattern pieces and then cut them out, cutting away any pen, pencil, or chalk lines. Remember to cut out any notches that appear on the edges. These markings help line up the pieces when you assemble the garment.
Use your marking pen, pencil, or chalk to transfer the markings (such as circles, buttonholes, and fold lines) to the wrong side of the fabric. Mark the center front of pieces cut on the fold, as this will help you align pieces accurately.
Seam Allowance
Please follow the seam allowances as indicated on the pattern file layers. These are provided specifically for each piece to ensure accurate construction.
This pattern uses a 1 cm (3/8 inch) seam allowance all around, a 1.6 cm (5/8 inch) at the hem and slit, and a 2 cm (3/4 inch) at the front skirt waist and the back skirt waist.
Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions
1. Prepare the Front Bodice
1a. Create a buttonhole 1 inch away from the V-neck seamline of the Front Bodice along the casing marking.
1b. Double-fold the V-neck seam allowance of the Front Bodice to the wrong side—first by 1/4 inch, then again along the seamline. Sew along the folded edge to finish the raw edge.
Repeat the same process for the second Front Bodice piece.
2. Prepare the Back Bodice
2a. Place the Neck Binding on the Back Bodice with right sides together. Align one long edge of the binding with the neckline seam allowance and sew along the seamline.
2b. Fold the Neck Binding inward from the stitch line toward the neckline and press.
2c. Understitch along the neckline, sewing close to the seam.
2d. Fold the Neck Binding to the wrong side of the Back Bodice. Double-fold the open raw edge of the binding—first by 1/4 inch, then again along the seamline. Sew along the outer folded edge to finish.
3. Join the Bodice Shoulders
- Place the prepared Front Bodice pieces on the Back Bodice with right sides together.
- Align and sew the shoulder seams.
4. Attach the Sleeves
4a. Spread the prepared upper bodice open and lay it flat with the right side facing up.
4b. Place the Sleeve on the bodice with right sides together. Align the center notch of the sleeve with the shoulder seam and sew along the armhole seamline.
4c. Repeat for the second sleeve.
5. Sew the Bodice Side Seams
- Turn the bodice wrong side out.
- Align the side seams and sew along the seamline.
- Repeat for the other side.
6. Sew the Skirt Side Seams
- Place the Front Skirt on the Back Skirt with right sides together.
- Align the side seams from the waist edge down to the slit notches.
- Pin and sew both side seams.
7. Attach the Bodice and Create the Casing
7a. Turn the bodice right side out and keep the skirt wrong side out. Insert the bodice into the skirt so the right sides are facing together.
7b. Position the bodice so that its center edges align with the center tip of the Front Skirt. Pin in place.
7c. Align the undersbust and empire back seamlines of the bodice and skirt. Sew along the seamline.
7d. Pull the bodice out of the skirt and press the underbust seam.
7e. Trim the skirt seam allowance to reduce bulk. Fold the seam allowance of the undersbust casing line and empire back casing line toward the right side of the fabric. Press, pin, and sew around the folded edge to create the casing.
8. Finish the Side Slits
- Clip the slit notch to the seamline.
- Double-fold the slit seam allowance of the dress to the wrong side—first by 1/4 inch, then again along the seamline.
- Sew along the folded edge from the top of the slit down to the hem.
- Repeat for the remaining slit edges.
9. Hem the Dress
- Double-fold the hem allowance of the Front Dress to the wrong side—first by 1/4 inch, then again along the hemline.
- Sew along the folded edge.
- Repeat for the Back Dress hem.
10. Create the Drawstring
10a. Fold the Waist Tie in half lengthwise with right sides together and press.
10b. Sew 1/4 inch away from the raw edge along the long side.
10c. Use a loop turner to turn the tie right side out.
11. Insert the Drawstring
- Insert one end of the drawstring into one of the buttonholes and thread it through the casing until it emerges from the second buttonhole.
- Distribute the fullness evenly.
- Tip: Attach a safety pin to the end of the tie to help guide it through the casing.
