Fabric Cutting and Preparation

Lay Out Your Pattern Pieces

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams. Begin by positioning the pieces on the fabric, ensuring that the grainline arrow runs parallel to the selvage.

Cut Your Fabric

If you are using fabric shears, trace the pattern pieces and then cut them out, cutting away any pen, pencil, or chalk lines. Remember to cut out any notches that appear on the edges. These markings help line up the pieces when you assemble the garment.

Transfer Pattern Markings

Use your marking pen, pencil, or chalk to transfer the markings (such as circles, buttonholes, and fold lines) to the wrong side of the fabric. Mark the center front of pieces cut on the fold, as this will help you to align pieces accurately.

Seam Allowance

Please follow the seam allowances as indicated on the pattern file layers. These are provided specifically for each piece to ensure accurate construction.

This pattern uses a 1.2 cm (or 1/2” inch) seam allowance all around, 2 cm (or 3/4”) at the hem and at the elastic of the back bottom.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

1. Sew the Darts

Fold the dart by matching the dart legs with their right sides together on the front top piece. Sew along the seamline on the wrong side of the fabric and press it flat toward the side seam.

Repeat the step for the other dart on the front top pieces.

2. Create the Straps

2a. Cut two binding strip pieces measuring 24 inches × 1.5 inches.

2b. Fold each piece in half lengthwise with the wrong side facing out. Press to create a crease.

2c. Sew 0.25 inches away from the raw edge along the long side.

2d. Use a loop turner to turn each strap right side out.

Repeat the same process for the second strap.

3. Prepare the Front Top

3a. Place the strap end on one front top piece with the right side facing up, aligning it at the strap seam. Place the second front top piece right side down over it, sandwiching the strap in between. Align all edges and pin to secure.

3b. Start sewing from the side seam, continue through the strap seam, and finish along the neckline seam.

3c. Turn the front piece right side out and press.

3d. Repeat the same process for the remaining front top pieces and strap.

4. Prepare the Bottom with French Seams

4a. Place both front bottom pieces with their wrong sides together. Align the center front.

4b. Sew on the seam allowance of the center front at 1/8 inch away from the edge. Do not sew on the seamline.

4c. Fold the pieces along the seam so that the right sides are facing together. Press.

4d. Sew along the center front seamline to encase the raw edges and complete the French seam.

4e. Using the same method, attach the side seams of the prepared front bottom and back bottom pieces. Place them wrong sides together, aligning the side seam. Sew on the seam allowance at 1/8 inch away from the edge.

4f. Fold the bottom pieces along the seam so the right sides are facing together. Press and sew along the side seam to complete the French seam.

4g. Repeat the same process for the remaining side seam.

5. Create Gathers on the Bottom Piece

5a. Set the sewing machine to a stitch length of 5–7 mm. Sew on the waist seam allowance from one elastic notch to the other, following the gather marking.

Tie the threads at one end. Pull the thread from the other end to create gathers.

6. Attach the Top and Bottom

6a. Turn the prepared bottom piece wrong side out. Take one prepared front top piece and wrap its waist seam over the waist of the bottom piece.

Adjust the gathers evenly so the dart seam aligns with the dart notch, the waist end at the neckline aligns with the center front, the side seam notch aligns with the side seam, and the waist end at the side seam aligns with the elastic notch. Pin in place.

Repeat the same process for the second front top piece.

6b. Sew on the seam allowance at 1/8 inch away from the waist edge.

6c. Clip the elastic seam allowance of the bottom until the stitch line at both waist ends of the front top.

6d. Fold the top pieces from the waist seam to the right side of the bottom piece. Press. Sew along the waist seamline from one elastic notch to the other.

6e. Place and align the elastic strip along the elastic seam. Pin both ends of the elastic at the marked notches. Secure the ends with backstitches.

6f. Fold the clipped elastic seam allowance toward the wrong side.

6g. Fold the elastic seam allowance along the seamline to enclose the elastic strip. Sew along the edge of the folded elastic seam to encase the elastic, stretching the elastic while sewing.

6h. Secure both ends of the elastic seam with a few backstitches. Ensure the French waist seam remains pressed downward while sewing.

7. Finish the Hem

Double fold the seam allowance of the dress on the wrong side—first by 1/8 inch, then again along the seamline. Sew around the edge to finish the raw edges.

8. Create the Halter Neck

8a. Measure from the end of the front strap and mark a point 6–8 inches away, as desired. This will become the halter neck point. Align both straps parallel to each other and sew them together at this point.

8b. From the halter neck point, measure down 8–10 inches, as desired, and mark the spot. Align this point with the waist stitch line and sew to secure the halter straps in place.

You can adjust the halter neck length to suit your preferred fit and comfort.
