Pattern Inventory: What Pieces to Prepare

Prepare the following pattern pieces before cutting your fabric:

Crop Top

  • A. Front bodice — Cut 1 fabric
  • B. Back bodice — Cut 2 fabric
  • C. Sleeve — Cut 2 fabric
  • D. Neck facing — Cut 1 fabric

Flared Skirt

  • E. Skirt — Cut 2 fabric
  • F. Waist belt — Cut 2 fabric

If you're printing the pattern at home, use the A4/US Letter version. For copy shop printing, use the A0 version.

Pattern Marking

Transfer all pattern markings carefully before sewing. The Cindy 70s Pop Doll Outfit pattern includes the following markings:

Crop Top

  • Grainlines
  • Center back
  • Neckline
  • Shoulder
  • Armhole
  • Side seams
  • Sleeve hem
  • Hem

Flared Skirt

  • Grainline
  • Waist
  • Side seams
  • Hem

Cutting Layout

Arrange all pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams to ensure each piece is cut on grain. Position every grainline parallel to the fabric selvage before pinning the pattern pieces securely in place.

Separate cutting layouts are provided for the crop top and the flared skirt, both based on 60-inch-wide fabric. The layouts are intended for non-directional fabrics. If you're using fabric with a nap or directional print, purchase additional fabric to accommodate the layout.

Fabric Cutting and Preparation

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams before cutting. Make sure each grainline arrow runs parallel to the fabric selvage for accurate cutting.

If you're using fabric shears, trace around each pattern piece before cutting. Remove any pen, pencil, or chalk lines as you cut, and clip all notches carefully. These markings help align the pieces accurately during construction.

Transfer all pattern markings—including circles, buttonholes, fold lines, and the center front marking—to the wrong side of the fabric using a marking pen, pencil, or chalk before sewing.

Seam Allowance

Please follow the seam allowances as indicated on the pattern file layers. These are provided specifically for each piece to ensure accurate construction.

This pattern uses:

  • 1.3 cm (1/2") seam allowance all around.
  • 1 cm (3/8") seam allowance all around the waist belt and at the neck.
  • 2 cm (3/4") hem allowance at the hem.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

Crop Top

1. Attach the Shoulders

1a. Place one back bodice piece on the front bodice with their right sides together. Sew along the shoulder seam.

1b. Repeat Step 1a for the opposite shoulder using the remaining back bodice piece.

2. Attach the Sleeves

2a. Fold the sleeve in half, aligning the side seams, and clip the armhole at the center fold.

2b. Place the sleeve on the opened bodice with right sides together, aligning the armholes. Match the shoulder seam with the notch created at the center of the sleeve armhole.

2c. Sew along the armhole seam.

2d. Repeat Steps 2a–2c for the second sleeve on the opposite side of the bodice.

3. Attach the Side Seams

Align the side seams of the bodice and sleeves. Sew along the seamline in one continuous stitch on each side.

4. Attach the Neck Facing

4a. Lay the bodice flat from the shoulder seams with the right side facing up.

4b. Place the neck facing on top of the bodice neckline with right sides together. Align the facing edge with the neckline and match the center back edges on both sides. Sew along the neckline seam.

4c. Clip the neckline corners to help them fold smoothly.

4d. Fold the neck facing toward the wrong side of the bodice along the seamline. Fold 0.25 cm of the raw edge of the neck facing toward its wrong side and sew along the folded edge to finish the raw edge neatly.

5. Finish the Center Back Edges

5a. Double-fold each center back seam allowance toward the wrong side—first by 0.25 cm, then again from the seamline. Sew along the folded edge to finish the raw edge.

Repeat the same process for both center back edges.

6. Finish the Hem

6a. Double-fold the bottom hem of the bodice toward the wrong side—first by 0.25 cm, then again from the hemline. Sew along the folded edge to finish the raw edge.

6b. Attach a safety pin to one end of the 10-inch elastic and insert it into the hem casing, threading it through from one end to the other. Once the elastic is fully inserted, sew it securely at both ends.

7. Attach the Velcro

Measure the finished center back length from the neckline to the hem and cut the Velcro to the same length.

Place and align the Velcro along the center back edges:

  • Position the rough side of the Velcro on the left center back, on the right side of the fabric.
  • Position the soft side on the right center back, on the wrong side of the fabric.

Sew around the edges of both Velcro strips to secure them to the center back closure.

Flared Skirt

8. Install the Side Zipper

8a. Place the zipper along the side seam of one skirt piece with the zipper head positioned at the waistline. Mark where the zipper ends and clip the seam allowance to create the zipper end notch.

Repeat the same process for the second skirt piece.

8b. Open the zipper. Place one zipper tape along the skirt side seam, between the waistline and the zipper end notch, with right sides together. Align the zipper teeth with the side seam and sew along the seamline.

Repeat the same process for the second zipper tape on the opposite skirt piece.

9. Sew the Side Seams

9a. Align the skirt side seam with the wrong side out. Sew from the zipper end down to the hem.

9b. Align the remaining side seam from the waist to the hem and sew along the seamline.

10. Prepare the Waist Belt

10a. Fold one long edge seam allowance of the waist belt toward the wrong side. Place both waist belt pieces right sides together.

10b. Align the waist belt pieces and sew around the remaining three sides, leaving the folded edge open.

10c. Turn the waist belt right side out.

11. Attach the Waist Belt

11a. Place the prepared waist belt around the waist of the skirt with the right side facing the skirt. Position the folded edge over the front of the skirt and align the unfolded edge with the waistline. Sew around the waist seam.

11b. Turn the skirt wrong side out. Spread open the waist belt and skirt along the waist seam. Fold the seam allowance inside the waist belt and align the folded edge over the waist seam. Sew along the folded edge to close the waist belt neatly.

12. Finish the Hem

Double-fold the skirt hem toward the wrong side—first by 0.25 cm, then again by 0.25 cm. Sew along the folded edge to neatly finish the raw edge.

13. Attach the Hook and Eye

Hand stitch the hook to the corner of the front waist belt and the eye to the back waist belt to complete the skirt closure.
