If you're printing the pattern at home, use the A4/US Letter pattern.

Cutting Layout

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams before cutting, ensuring every grainline runs parallel to the fabric selvage for accurate cutting.
Separate cutting layouts are provided for 45-inch and 60-inch-wide fabrics. The layouts are intended for non-directional fabrics. If you're using fabric with a nap or directional print, purchase additional fabric to accommodate the layout. The sewing guide uses US 8–10 as the example layout.
Fabric Cutting and Preparation
Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams, positioning each grainline arrow parallel to the fabric selvage before pinning the pieces in place.
If you're using fabric shears, trace the pattern pieces before cutting. Remove any pen, pencil, or chalk lines as you cut, and clip all notches carefully to help align the garment accurately during assembly.
Transfer all pattern markings, including circles, buttonholes, fold lines, and the center front marking, to the wrong side of the fabric using a marking pen, pencil, or chalk before sewing.
Seam Allowance
Use the seam allowances marked on each pattern piece. These are precisely included to ensure proper fit.
This pattern uses:
- 1 cm (3/8") seam allowance all around.
- 2 cm (3/4") seam allowance at the hem.
Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions
1. Sew the Shoulder Seams
1a. Place the front and back pieces right sides together, aligning the shoulder seams. Sew both shoulder seams.
1b. Finish the seam allowances using a serger or a zigzag stitch to prevent the fabric from stretching out.
1c. Press the seam allowances toward the back.
2. Attach the Sleeves
2a. Lay the bodice flat with the right side facing up.
2b. Place one sleeve onto the armhole with right sides together, matching the front armhole, back armhole, and center armhole notch.
2c. Sew around the armhole. Repeat for the second sleeve.
Finish both armhole seam allowances using a serger or zigzag stitch and press them toward the sleeves.
3. Sew the Side Seams and Sleeves
Place the front and back right sides together, aligning the underarm seams and side seams. Sew continuously from the sleeve hem to the garment hem on each side, leaving the marked thumbhole opening unstitched.
Finish the seam allowances using a serger or zigzag stitch and press them toward the back.
4. Create the Thumbholes
Fold the seam allowances around the thumbhole opening toward the wrong side and secure them with a coverstitch, twin needle, or another suitable stretch stitch to create a neat, durable opening.
5. Finish the Hem and Sleeve Hems
5a. Fold the bottom hem toward the wrong side using the hem allowance provided in the pattern and press.
5b. Coverstitch or twin-needle stitch the bottom hem to secure it.
5c. Fold each sleeve hem toward the wrong side and press.
5d. Coverstitch or twin-needle stitch both sleeve hems to complete the sleeve finish.
6. Prepare the Neck Band
6a. Fold the neck band in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and press.
6b. Join the short ends of the neck band with right sides together to form a loop.
6c. Fold the neck band again along the pressed fold with the raw edges aligned.
7. Attach the Neck Band
7a. Divide both the neckline and neck band into equal quarters. Match the quarter marks and pin the neck band to the neckline with right sides together, stretching the neck band evenly to fit. Sew around the neckline using a stretch stitch or serger.
7b. Press the seam allowance toward the body. Topstitch the neckline with a coverstitch, twin needle, or another suitable stretch stitch if desired. Give the entire garment a final press. Your Sookie Bolero Shrug is now complete.
