-
Arrange pattern pieces according to the layout diagrams.
-
Ensure the grainline arrow runs parallel to the fabric selvage.
-
Pin pattern pieces before cutting for improved accuracy.
-
Layouts are intended for non-directional fabrics.
-
Purchase extra fabric when using fabrics with nap or directional prints.
-
The illustrated layouts use a US 8–10 size for demonstration purposes.
Fabric Cutting and Preparation
Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams. Begin by positioning the pieces on the fabric, ensuring that the grainline arrow runs parallel to the selvage.
If you are using fabric shears, trace the pattern pieces and then cut them out, cutting away any pen, pencil, or chalk lines. Remember to cut out any notches that appear on the edges. These markings help line up the pieces when you assemble the garment.
Use your marking pen, pencil, or chalk to transfer the markings (such as circles, buttonholes, and fold lines) to the wrong side of the fabric. Mark the center front of pieces cut on the fold, as this will help you align pieces accurately.
Seam Allowance
Please follow the seam allowances as indicated on the pattern file layers. These are provided specifically for each piece to ensure accurate construction.
This pattern uses a 1 cm (3/8”) seam allowance all around, 2.5 cm (1”) at the hem, 2 cm (3/4”) at the cargo pocket top and 1 cm (3/8”) and 2.5 cm (1”) at cargo pocket side strip.
Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions
1. Attach the Side Pockets
1a. Place the left pocket piece right sides together on the left front leg pocket opening marking and pin.
1b. Sew along the opening line.
1c. Spread the pieces open and understitch the pocket.
1d. Turn the pocket to the wrong side of the front leg and press the seamline. Sew along the edge of the opening.
1e. Fold the pocket along the center line with the right side facing inside. Overlock the bottom edge to create the pocket bag.
1f. Sew a few stitches to secure the top and side of the pocket to the front pant leg. Stitch from the folded edge of the pocket along the waist to the notch and from the bottom of the pocket at the side seam to the notch along the side pocket.
Repeat the same process for the other leg.
2. Sew the Side Seams
Place the front and back pieces with right sides together and sew the side seam.
3. Attach the Cargo Pockets
3a. Cut fusible interfacing for the cargo pocket flap and the opening seam allowance of the cargo pocket piece. Fuse it to the wrong side of the pocket pieces.
3b. Fold the cargo pocket opening twice toward the wrong side. The first fold should be 1 cm and the second fold should follow the seamline.
3c. Sew along the folded edge to finish the opening.
3d. Fold and press the seam allowance along the sides and bottom of the pocket to the wrong side.
3e. Fold both long edges of the cargo pocket side strip toward the center by approximately 0.5–1 cm and press.
3f. Align the wrong side of the cargo pocket with the folded edge of the strip and sew around the three sides of the pocket, attaching the strip completely. Trim any excess strip if needed.
3g. Place the assembled cargo pocket on the cargo pocket marking. Position the folded edge of the strip on the pocket marking guideline and sew around the edges using U-shaped stitching.
3h. Secure both sides of the pocket opening with a few locking stitches.
4. Attach the Cargo Pocket Flaps
4a. Fold the cargo pocket flap in half with right sides together. Sew both short sides, clip the corners, and turn right side out.
4b. Topstitch around the flap edges, leaving the opening side unstitched.
4c. Position the opening edge of the flap above the cargo pocket at the flap marking. Leave approximately 1/8" between the flap and pocket and sew along the marked line.
4d. Fold the flap downward to cover the cargo pocket opening and topstitch close to the seam to conceal the attachment seam allowance.
5. Sew the Inseams
Place the front and back leg pieces right sides together and sew the inseams.
6. Sew the Crotch Seam
Turn one leg right side out and insert it into the other leg. Match the crotch seams and sew around the crotch curve in one continuous seam.
7. Prepare the Waistband
Join the short ends of the waist belt to form a loop and press the seam open.
8. Attach the Waistband
Fold the waistband in half lengthwise and attach it to the waist opening, matching the raw edges.
9. Insert the Elastic
Insert the elastic through the waistband casing, overlap the ends, and secure them together. Close the opening.
10. Hem the Sweatpants
Fold the hem allowance toward the wrong side and stitch to finish the pant legs.
