Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

1. Attach the Side Pockets
1a. Place the Front (Pattern A) and Pocket (Pattern C) pieces together with right sides facing. Sew the line between the pocket notches, then clip the corners.
1b. Press the seam open along the pocket opening to create a clean finish.
1c. Turn the pocket piece toward the wrong side of the front piece and sew along the pocket opening to secure the two pieces together.
1d. Fold the pocket piece in half and position it on the wrong side of the front leg. Match the pocket notches carefully and pin in place. Stitch along the marked line, leaving the section between the two notches open to create the pocket opening.
1e. Finish the unfolded pocket edges with an overlock stitch or lock stitch, leaving the section between the two pocket notches unstitched.
2. Sew the Front and Back Crotch Seams
Match the two Back (Pattern B) pieces with right sides together and sew along the crotch seam. Finish the crotch seam with an overlock stitch or lock stitch.
Repeat the same process for the two front pieces.
3. Sew the Side Seams
After sewing both front and back crotch seams, place the prepared back over the prepared front with right sides together, keeping both legs open from the crotch seam.
Sew both side seams using an overlock stitch or lock stitch.
4. Sew the Inseam
Align the crotch seams with the right sides facing together and pin if necessary.
Sew continuously from one hem through the inseam and crotch to the opposite hem using an overlock stitch or lock stitch.
5. Create the Waistband and Insert the Elastic
5a. Fold the top waistband edge toward the wrong side by 1 cm (3/8") and press.
5b. Fold the waistband again along the waistband fold line to create the elastic casing. Press and pin if needed.
5c. Sew around the lower edge of the folded waistband, leaving an opening to insert the elastic.
5d. Thread the elastic through the waistband casing using a safety pin or bodkin, taking care not to twist the elastic.
5e. Overlap the elastic ends and sew them securely together.
5f. Distribute the gathers evenly around the waistband, then close the opening with a lock stitch.
6. Prepare and Insert the Waist Tie
6a. Fold the waist tie lengthwise with right sides together and sew along the long edge and one short end.
6b. Trim the seam allowance if needed, turn the waist tie right side out, and press.
6c. Topstitch around the waist tie if desired for a neat finish.
6d. Work the buttonholes at the marked positions on the front waistband.
