Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions
Pro Tip: An overlock stitch is recommended for construction and a flat stitch for hemming. If these machines are unavailable, use a zigzag stitch for overlocking and a straight stitch for hemming. Pin the pieces before sewing and press after every step for the best results.
1. Attach the Front Pockets
1a. Fold the Front Pocket Bone piece in half lengthwise and press.
1b. Place the Front Pocket Bottom piece onto the pocket marking of the Front piece with wrong sides together and pin.
1c. Position the open edge of the folded Pocket Bone along the inner pocket opening guideline on the right side of the Front piece. Sew along the pocket opening guideline, catching the Pocket Bottom at the same time.
1d. Press the Pocket Bone seam allowance away from the Front piece to reveal the pocket marking.
1e. Place the Front Pocket Upper piece along the outer pocket opening guideline with right sides together. Sew along the seamline.
1f. Fold the Pocket Upper seam allowance away to expose the pocket opening. Trim through the center of the opening and clip both corners into a V-shape.
1g. Turn the Pocket Bone and Pocket Upper through the trimmed opening to the wrong side of the Front piece.
1h. Align the Pocket Upper and Pocket Bottom pieces and sew around the seamline to create the pocket bag.
1i. Pull the Front piece downward and reinforce both the top and bottom of the pocket opening with several backstitches to secure the V-shaped corners.
1j. Topstitch around the pocket opening, taking care not to sew the opening closed.
Repeat Steps 1a–1j for the second Front piece.
2. Create the Optional Front Piping
2a. Cut a strip 5 cm wide and the length of the front across and sleeve side seam, adding 2 cm for seam allowance.
2b. Place the string along the center of the wrong side of the strip.
2c. Fold the strip over the string to enclose it.
2d. Stitch close to the string to create the piping.
Prepare two piping strips.
Note: The piping shown on the sample garment is optional.
3. Join the Front and Back Shoulder Pieces
Place the Front and Back Shoulder pieces with right sides together.
Align the back center line and sew along the seamline.
Press the seam allowances open on the wrong side.
4. Assemble the Jacket
4a. Place the prepared Front and Back Shoulder section onto the Back piece with right sides together. Match the back across notch with the sewn seamline and stitch along the seam.
4b. Press the seam allowances open.
4c. Place the Elbow Sleeve onto the elbow panel of the Back piece with right sides together. Align the elbow panel seamline and sew to the elbow notch.
4d. Align the sleeve side seams with right sides together and sew along the seamline.
4e. Press the seam from the right side.
4f. Align the Front elbow sleeve seamline with the Elbow Sleeve and sew with right sides together.
4g. Repeat Steps 4c–4f for the opposite sleeve and Front section.
4h. Align the side seams and sew along the seamline.
To achieve the correct placement, fold the shoulder and sleeve line and press toward the right side. Then fold the elbow sleeve at the elbow panel notch so the Front side seams align with the Back piece.
4i. Place the raw edges of the prepared piping between the front across and sleeve side seam of the jacket. Align and pin.
4j. Sew along the seamline to secure the piping.
4k. Repeat Steps 4i and 4j for the opposite side of the jacket
5. Prepare the Jacket Lining
5a. Place the Front Net pieces with right sides together.
5b. Align the center line and sew along the seamline.
5c. Place the Front and Back Shoulder Net piece onto the Back Net piece with right sides together. Align the back across seamline.
5d. Sew along the back seamline following the same method used in Step 4a. Spread the seam allowance open and press.
5e. Repeat the construction process from Steps 4b–4h to assemble the lining, excluding the optional piping.
6. Attach the Sleeve Cuffs
6a. Cut an elastic strip to match the cuff length, reducing it by ½–1 inch, or adjust it to your preferred snugness.
Place the elastic on the wrong side of the Sleeve Cuff and stitch along both seam allowances to hold it in place.
6b. Fold the Sleeve Cuff in half lengthwise with right sides together and sew along the short seam to form a loop.
6c. Fold the cuff lengthwise again so the elastic is enclosed inside and the right side faces outward.
Repeat Steps 6a–6c for the second cuff.
6d. Place the raw edge of each completed cuff onto the sleeve opening with right sides together.
Align the seamlines evenly, pin, and sew around the cuff opening.
Repeat for the opposite sleeve.
7. Prepare the Waistband
7a. Place the Waistband Inside piece onto the bottom hem of the jacket with right sides together.
Sew along the seamline.
7b. Spread the seam allowance open and press.
7c. Place the completed jacket and the lining with right sides together.
Align the bottom edges and sew along the entire bottom seamline.
8. Attach the Neck Collar
8a. Fold the Neck Collar along the center line with the right side facing outward.
8b. Place the open edge of the Neck Collar onto the jacket neckline.
8c. Position the lining with right sides together over the Neck Collar.
Align the neckline edges and sew along the neckline seam.
Turn the jacket and lining right side out.
8d. Insert each lining sleeve inside its corresponding jacket sleeve.
Press the stitched neckline seam.
8e. Pull the sleeve out together with the lining.
Align the right side of the lining sleeve cuff with the seam allowance of the jacket sleeve hem.
Sew all the way around the cuff seam.
Repeat for the second sleeve.
9. Attach the Front Zipper and Waist Elastic
9a. Separate the jacket zipper.
Place each zipper tape onto the center front edge of the jacket with right sides together.
Sew from the top of the jacket down to the bottom hem.
9b. Turn the zipper tape toward the inside between the jacket and lining.
Insert an elastic strip between the lining and the jacket hem.
Cut the elastic to the waistband length, reducing it by 2–4 inches depending on your preferred fit.
9c. Pin both ends of the elastic securely at the side seams.
9d. Fold the center front edge of the lining inward.
Align the folded edge with the zipper tape and pin.
Sew along the lining seamline from the top of the jacket to the hem, keeping the stitching straight.
Repeat the same process for the opposite front edge.
Sew several additional stitches through the waistband to secure the elastic firmly in place.
10. Finish the Waistband
Stretch the waistband evenly while sewing.
