Cutting Layout

The guide includes layouts for both 45-inch and 60-inch fabric widths and is intended for non-directional fabrics. If your fabric has a directional print or nap, purchase additional fabric and adjust the layout accordingly. The illustrated layouts use the smallest size as an example.
Fabric Cutting and Preparation
Arrange all pattern pieces according to the cutting layout before cutting.
When cutting your fabric:
- Align every grainline parallel to the fabric selvage.
- Trace around the pattern pieces if desired before cutting.
- Cut all pieces carefully, including every notch.
- Transfer all required markings to the wrong side of the fabric using tailor's chalk or another suitable marking tool.
These markings will help align the pleats, waistband, straps, and zipper accurately during sewing.
Seam Allowance
Please follow the seam allowances as indicated on the pattern file layers. These are provided specifically for each piece to ensure accurate construction.
This pattern uses a 1 cm (0.38 inch) seam allowance throughout and a 1.5 cm (0.6 inch) hem allowance.
Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions
1. Create the Pleats
1a. Fold the pleats from one notch to the next on both the front and back skirt pieces. Each box marking represents one pleat, giving a total of 10 pleats on the front and 10 pleats on the back.
1b. Secure the pleats with basting stitches and press them neatly.
Complete all twenty pleats before moving on to the next step.
2. Secure the Pleats
Sew along the folded edge of each pleat for approximately 4 inches (10 cm) from the waistline to hold the pleats securely in place.
3. Make the Suspenders
3a. Fold each strap lengthwise in half with the right sides together.
3b. Stitch along the long edge of each strap.
3c. Turn each strap right side out using a point-turning tool or similar tool, then press flat.
4. Attach the Suspenders to the Front Waistband
4a. Position both straps at the marked strap notches on the front waistband.
4b. Place the second front waistband piece on top, sandwiching the straps between the two waistband layers.
4c. Sew along the waistband seamline to secure the straps inside the waistband.
5. Attach the Front Waistband
Set one waistband piece aside.
Place the wrong side of the front skirt along the waistline of the remaining waistband piece and sew them together.
6. Finish the Waistband
Cover the raw waist edge with the waistband piece that was set aside. Fold the waistband seam allowance over the raw edge, press neatly, and stitch along the waistband edge to fully enclose the raw edges.
Repeat Steps 4–6 for the back skirt using the remaining waistband and the opposite ends of the suspenders.
7. Sew the Right Side Seam
Place the front and back skirt pieces right sides together and sew the right side seam.
8. Insert the Zipper
8a. Place the right side of one zipper tape along the seamline of the front skirt opening. Pin and stitch the zipper in place. Repeat for the opposite zipper tape on the back skirt.
8b. Close the zipper and pull the zipper tape toward the wrong side of the skirt. Secure the zipper end with several backstitches, then tuck the zipper end neatly underneath.
9. Finish the Top of the Zipper
9a. Fold the raw fabric edges at the top of the zipper toward the wrong side.
9b. Secure the folded edges with hand stitches or backstitches to create a clean finish.
10. Sew the Left Side Seam
Starting from the zipper end, sew the remaining left side seam to complete the skirt.
11. Finish the Hem
Fold the hem allowance twice toward the wrong side to enclose the raw edge. Stitch around the entire hem, beginning and ending at the side seam for a neat, durable finish.
