Fabric Cutting and Preparation

Lay Out Your Pattern Pieces

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams. Begin by positioning the pieces on the fabric, ensuring that the grainline arrow runs parallel to the selvage.

Cut Your Fabric

If you are using fabric shears, trace the pattern pieces and then cut them out, cutting away any pen, pencil, or chalk lines. Remember to cut out any notches that appear on the edges. These markings help line up the pieces when you assemble the garment.

Transfer Pattern Markings

Use your marking pen, pencil, or chalk to transfer the markings (such as circles, buttonholes, and fold lines) to the wrong side of the fabric. Mark the center front of pieces cut on the fold, as this will help you to align pieces accurately.

Seam Allowance

Please follow the seam allowances as indicated on the pattern file layers. These are provided specifically for each piece to ensure accurate construction.

This pattern uses a 1.2 cm (or 0.5 inch) seam allowance all around and 2.5 cm (or 1 inch) at the hem.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

1. Sew the Front Darts

Fold the fabric right side to right side, matching the dart markings on the front bodice piece. Secure the dart fold by stitching along the dart leg on the wrong side. Press the dart to one side to reduce bulk in the finished garment. Repeat the same process for the front bodice lining.

2. Join the Main Fabric and Lining

Place the front bodice lining over the front bodice with wrong sides together and stitch them together along both side seams. Repeat the same process for the back bodice.

3. Sew the First Side Seam

Place the front bodice on the back bodice with right sides together and overlock one side seam.

4. Sew the Neckline

Align the front and back bodice neckline with the front and back lining and stitch them together.

5. Prepare the Binding Strip

Cut a binding strip that is 2 inches wide. Measure the front and back neckline as well as the armholes for the required length, ensuring the strip is slightly longer than needed to allow for flexibility.

6. Bind the Neckline and Armholes

Place the binding strip inside the binder. Stitch about 1 inch and then insert the neckline seam allowance inside the binder. Start sewing from the front armhole point and end at the back neckline edge. Cut away any excess binding strip. Repeat to bind the neckline and armholes.

7. Continue Binding

Continue binding the neckline and armholes until all raw edges are neatly enclosed.

8. Sew the Remaining Side Seam

Place the front bodice on the back bodice with right sides together and overlock the remaining side seam.

9. Make the Adjustable Straps

9a. Cut two strips of fabric measuring 1.8 inches wide and 18 inches long, following the grainline.

9b. Fold each strip lengthwise with right sides together and press flat with an iron.

9c. Sew along the open side using a 0.4-inch seam allowance.

9d. Turn the fabric tubes right side out using a darning needle or a slender stick.

9e. Divide each tube into two pieces: one measuring 11 inches and the other 5 inches. Discard the leftover fabric.

9f. Slide one of the 11-inch straps through an adjustable slide buckle, folding about 1 inch of the strap back onto itself. Stitch this folded section securely with lock stitches and backstitches.

9g. Thread the free end of the same 11-inch strap through a strap loop ring, then weave it through the slide buckle, entering one side and exiting the other.

9h. Take a 5-inch strap and loop one end through the ring. Secure this end with lock stitches and backstitches.

Repeat the process with the remaining 11-inch and 5-inch strap pieces to create the second strap.

9i. Place the completed straps on the marked strap notches and sew them securely using backstitches. Press them neatly with an iron.

10. Finish the Hem

Finish the hem by folding it twice, making sure the raw edge is enclosed inside the fold. Topstitch along the hem to complete the dress.
