Cutting Layout

The cutting layout helps ensure that your garment is cut accurately on grain.

  • Align all grainline arrows parallel to the fabric selvage.

  • Pin pattern pieces securely before cutting.

  • The layouts provided are nondirectional.

  • Purchase additional fabric when working with directional prints or fabrics with nap.

  • Separate layouts are provided for both 45-inch and 60-inch fabric widths.

  • The illustrated layouts use a Large size for demonstration.

Fabric Cutting and Preparation

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams. Begin by positioning the pieces on the fabric, ensuring that the grainline arrow runs parallel to the selvage.

If you are using fabric shears, trace the pattern pieces and then cut them out, cutting away any pen, pencil, or chalk lines. Remember to cut out any notches that appear on the edges. These markings help line up the pieces when you assemble the garment.

Use your marking pen, pencil, or chalk to transfer the markings (such as circles, buttonholes, and fold lines) to the wrong side of the fabric. Mark the center front of pieces cut on the fold, as this will help you align pieces accurately.

Seam Allowance

Please follow the seam allowances as indicated on the pattern file layers. These are provided specifically for each piece to ensure accurate construction.

This pattern uses a 1.1 cm (or 0.45 inch) seam allowance all around and 1.9 cm (or 0.75 inch) at the hem.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions of sewing a midi dress

1. Create Gathers on the Sleeve Armholes

1a. Set your sewing machine to a 5–7 mm stitch length and sew basting stitches between the seam allowances of the sleeve armhole.

1b. Tie the threads at one end. Pull the thread from the opposite end to create gathers.

Repeat for the second sleeve.

2. Finish the Neckline

2a. Place both Front Top pieces with right sides together.

2b. Sew along the neckline and clip the neckline seam allowance.

2c. Turn the Front Top pieces wrong sides together and press the neckline flat. Sew approximately 0.25 cm away from the neckline to secure the layers together.

Repeat the same process for the Back Top pieces.

3. Join the Shoulder Seams

  • Place the Front Top and Back Top pieces together with right sides facing.
  • Sew both shoulder seams.

4. Attach the Sleeves

4a. Open the top piece flat. Place the right side of the Sleeve against the right side of the armhole.

Adjust the gathered sleeve cap so it matches the armhole opening.

4b. Pin and sew the sleeve to the armhole.

Repeat for the second sleeve.

5. Create Gathers on the Sleeve Cuffs

  • Set your sewing machine to a 5–7 mm stitch length and sew basting stitches between the seam allowances at the sleeve cuff.
  • Tie the threads at one end and pull the opposite thread to create gathers.
  • Repeat for the second sleeve.

6. Attach and Finish the Sleeve Cuffs

6a. Adjust the gathered sleeve cuff so it matches the size of the Sleeve Cuff piece.

6b. Place the Sleeve Cuff on the sleeve with right sides together and sew.

6c. Fold the cuff downward from the stitch line and press. Fold the unstitched seam allowance to the wrong side and press. Fold again from the middle to the wrong side and press.

6d. Sew along the folded edge to close and finish the cuff.

7. Attach the Pockets

7a. Place a Pocket piece on the Bottom piece with right sides together, matching the pocket opening notches.

Sew from one notch to the other and clip the inside corner.

7b. Fold the Pocket piece along the stitch line toward the wrong side and press.

7c. Sew along the pocket opening edge to secure the pocket to the Bottom piece.

7d. Place a second Pocket piece on top of the attached Pocket piece.

7e. Sew the curved pocket edge together, stitching only the Pocket pieces.

7f. Repeat the entire process for the second pocket.

8. Create Gathers on the Bottom and Attach the Top

8a. Set your sewing machine to a 5–7 mm stitch length and sew basting stitches between the seam allowances of the waistline.
