Cutting Layout

The cutting layout is designed for 60-inch-wide fabric.

  • Arrange all pattern pieces with grainlines parallel to the selvage.

  • Pin pattern pieces securely before cutting.

  • Layouts are nondirectional.

  • Purchase additional fabric if using directional prints or fabrics with nap.

  • 45-inch-wide fabric is not recommended because the pattern pieces will not fit efficiently.

  • The layout illustration uses US size 4–6 as a representation.

Fabric Cutting and Preparation

Arrange the pattern pieces according to the cutting layout diagrams. Begin by positioning the pieces on the fabric, ensuring that the grainline arrow runs parallel to the selvage.

If you are using fabric shears, trace the pattern pieces and then cut them out, cutting away any pen, pencil, or chalk lines. Remember to cut out any notches that appear on the edges. These markings help line up the pieces when you assemble the garment.

Use your marking pen, pencil, or chalk to transfer the markings, such as fold lines and notches, to the wrong side of the fabric. Mark the center front of pieces cut on the fold to help align pieces accurately during construction.

Seam Allowance

Use the seam allowances marked on each pattern piece. These are precisely included to ensure proper fit.

This pattern uses a 1.2 cm (or 1/2 inch) seam allowance all around, 1 cm (or 1/2 inch) at the hem, 1.5 cm (or 5/8 inch) at the front armhole, 2 cm (or 3/4 inch) at the shoulder and 1 cm (or 3/8 inch) at the front neck.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

1. Create the Straps

Cut three fabric strips measuring 1 inch wide and 20 inches long.

Fold each strip in half along the long edge with right sides together and sew 0.5 cm from the fold to close the strip.

Use a loop turner to turn each strap right side out.

Trim the straps to the following lengths:

  • Two straps at 18 inches

  • One strap at 9 inches

2. Finish the Front Lining Hem

  • Fold the seam allowance of the front lining (Pattern A) hem twice.
  • First fold approximately 1/4–3/8 inch, then fold again from the seamline.
  • Press and pin carefully, especially when working with satin fabrics.
  • Sew the hem to finish the raw edges.

3. Sew the Front Armhole

  • Fold the front lining along the neckline toward the right side of the garment.
  • Press and pin the fold.
  • Sew along the armhole edge.

4. Attach the Back Facing

  • Place the back facing/lining (Pattern C) on the back piece (Pattern B) with right sides facing together.
  • Sew the side seam.

5. Sew the Center Back

Sew the center back seam as indicated.

6. Attach the Straps to the Back

  • Place the two 18-inch straps at the designated strap notches.
  • Place the 9-inch strap at the corner of the lining between the lining and the back piece.
  • Sew all straps securely to the back pieces.

7. Turn the Back Lining

  • Turn the back lining to the right side.
  • Leave the shoulder seam unstitched.

8. Attach the Shoulders

8a. Place the 9-inch strap between the front and front lining at the neckline. Pin or hand stitch it to hold it in place.

8b. Place the back piece inside the front lining. Pin the shoulder seams of the front and back pieces. Ensure the strap remains between the front and front lining layers before stitching.

8c. Use basting stitches to create additional pleats at the shoulders and hand stitch to hold them in position. The shoulder length should match the back shoulder, and the spacing between the two straps should remain equal to the back shoulder width.

8d. Sew both shoulder seams.

9. Sew the Side Seams

  • Turn the dress right side out.
  • Sew the side seam of the dress and sew the zipper side seam from the zipper end to the hem.

10. Insert the Zipper

  • Place the right side of the zipper tape on the right side below the seam allowance.
  • Sew alongside the zipper teeth from the top down to the zipper end notch.
  • Repeat for the opposite zipper tape.

11. Finish the Zipper Attachment

  • Place the right side of the dress lining onto the zipper tape.
  • Sew along the edge of the zipper teeth to finish the zipper attachment.

12. Close the Side Seam

  • Turn the zipper slider to the right side and close the zipper.
  • At the zipper end notch, close the remaining side seam.
  • Sew from the open section of the seam toward the zipper end so the stitching sits neatly beneath the zipper.

13. Hem the Dress

  • Fold the hem allowance twice.
  • First fold approximately 1/4–3/8 inch, then fold again from the seamline.
  • Begin stitching at one side seam and continue around the hem until you return to the starting point.
